Approved by coyotte508. I love the tournaments hosted on the server. However there is not much variety and most people run the same team all the way so a lot of ghosting happens. These are some of many reasons I would like to host some tournaments or leagues here on the forums keeping a more competetive value to it. But before we start I would like to know the interest and therefore this topic is made. In here I would like not only to see a "yes I want to play in a forum based tournament/no this is not interesting" but also ideas to what kind of tournaments or leagues that you would like to play. One example is the Salamence less metagame. This might very well happen in the near future if we follow the smogon tiering rules. For those of you who have not yet tried it out, or want to play it on something else than the suspect ladder on smogons server on shoddybattle this might be an interesting format. There can also be wild ideas like mono type tournaments or no steels tournaments which are all exciting and fun. The limit really comes down to your imaginations. However if there is not enough interest this project will be put on a hiatus or get disbanded all together though I do believe we will be able to work something out however few we are. Depending on amount of people wanting to play in one of these tournaments or leagues I might need some help organizing and such, but we can wait with this until we know for sure what will happen. So let me here your opinions and ideas to how this can be done. The ideas in this thread will be put up for a vote in the next so don't be shy, come out with whatever ideas you got.
first off great idea. i would like to suggest mono type tournys, as we can not do this through our current script.
You may not need a script to do this: if everything is controlled through the forums, you could just have matchups arranged in a thread, within a sub-forum for the tournament(s). Then, just get on the sim and battle the person you're paired against. You can make saving a log of the battle mandatory so there's no question of who won or lost, and also if someone broke a rule of the tourney. You would definitely need a few people to help keep track of who won in a round. I think it's a great idea, as well.
I would love to have these "real tournaments" run. It gves some meaning having them set up on the forums. I'm not saying winning the other ones aren't great, but I love this idea. I second oneballjays mono type tournament suggestion
This'd be great if it would work, but the biggest problem here is that not many people actually use the forums. Not many people would know about it or the rules you put in, and forcing them to to check this site every day just to participate is a little unfair. But if people don't mind going out of their way to check, then fair enough. However, if this idea goes ahead, I think mods should still be able to set up random tourneys so long as they don't overlap the scedualed ones. I *cautiously* agree with the idea. Not overly enthuastic though.
I agree with everything Bluff said, and will also say this: the tourneys we are running now started out as a test to the script, then to get people used to the process. Once the initial release is out, this "tourney every five minutes" will stop. This has been discussed many times. If your goal is to make tourneys seem more important, well, you should realise that as long as we're in Beta, then the developers care more about working on the sim than actually hosting tourneys, making leagues and all of that. Once we're out of beta, I'm sure there will be out a discussion about official tourneys like the ones smogon runs.
Basically what pokemonnerd said, since it is based on the forums I was thinking that we could take some time with this making each round last about a week or so, so that the players have some time to make edits to their team and get their battles done. With this format there is no problem with running these tournaments as a paralell to the tournaments on the server. I agree with you on the issue that there might not be enough activity here on the forums to make this happen, but I am hoping that these tournaments will bring some people here, maybe not from the first tournaments, but when people get to hear about them maybe more will come on to the forums to join in on one. There seems to be a misunderstanding and after having looked over my initial post I see I worded myself not very precise. I have no power over the tournaments hosted on the server. These tournaments are strictly forum based and I wouldn't care if you decided to battle eachother on shoddy even as long as the participants are satisfied with the result (though I am intending to force the battles to happen at a PO server as long as there are no complaints about it). Same as I said to Bluff. I didn't know about the server based tournaments would stop running when you have tested your script, though it makes a lot of sense since it forces an extreme amount of pressure on the staff to have to start tournaments all the time with the screaming masses wanting either that tourney or that tourney. That is a good example, these tournaments will run like those on smogon, though I am no admin and can't make any of these tournaments official. If there will be official tournaments in the future I would be really happy, though at the moment I would agree to settle with this.
the reason many people dont use these forums yet is mostly because they're new. A.R. said exactually what i was thinking. Forum Tournaments will bring new people to the forums over time.
The idea of tournaments hosted through the forums is both an interesting way to introduce new battles with unique restrictions and a way to increase community activity on the forums. I also see forum tournaments as an alternative to the tournaments using PO which require megausers/mods to start, which could potentially reduce the number of people begging for a new tourney to start or asking for tiers, as multiple tournaments of different tiers can be going on at the same time, organized via the forums. However, I do see a problem in that tournaments on the forums have to be controllable. Having 20 people each with their own tournament thread can quickly get out of hand very quickly.
Yes, I am hoping that someone would want to help me with this at a later time or even now if someone want to volunteer. However I believe I will manage pretty well at the first tournaments. I've seen enough interest to run a test league and a test tournament. I hope to have them up on this forum by tonight. EDIT: Actually the leauge will have to need a voting first, but the tournament should be pretty straight forward.
In short, what I read from your post is: "I have no auth and am not a megauser, but I want to run a tourney, and this is my way of getting around my lack of power." I am not against forum based tournaments. I simply think these overflowing stream of suggestions is getting kinda annoying. You, and everyone, should try and remember that you are not the messiah who will bring PO to its days of epic glory. This is not a bad suggestion; However, the fact that you immediately assumed the role of the leader bugs me. If every random user goes around strting tours, with no supervision, this will be mayhem, as coolguy said. As I said, it's fairly obvious from your posts that you're trying to gain power, and I do not really like that... I hope the mods will agree with me. Still, I maintain that this is not a bad suggestion. just don't assume that if it goes through, you're in charge.
Actually it has already been approved by coyotte508 as stated in the OP, and even though I am starting it up I do hope someone else would come to help me, and if we are enough, that I can step off from the responsibility to control the tournaments as later in the year I won't have the time. If you want to supervise all the tournaments that is entirely up to you and I look forward to cooperate with you. This would mean, though, tha you will have to take responsibility for the tournaments. Moding seems to me like a really time consuming job and seeing as I have no former experience and know nothing of programming and what not I do not believe myself fit for being any kind of mod or megauser (when online I would really like to play, not start tournaments every 5 min only to have the masses scream out what tier they want to play and whine since the tournament haven't started yet). I haven't even been to this site for even 2 weeks. I don't know the staff or what's going on here in the forums and I won't really go back and read all the threads archived here to get updated. When the finished PO comes out I understood it so that there would be official tournaments here hosted by the staff on site in which I will leave all to you guys. I wouldn't mind if you want a foot in here though as it takes some strain off of me. EDIT: I somewhat had trouble answering calmly to your post, you shouldn't really jump onto people like that with your conclusions without even knowing them.
That would be awesome oneballjay, I am at my family up north so I won't be able to log on all that much, mostly to check in on the ongoing signups. But we can discuss it closer when I come home, I need some help and it's great of you to help out!
I will be back atleast by the 26. of July, probably before that depending on he weather. If you want you can take care of the first round while I am away, I'll cc the teams I get to you and so on.
okay, ignore that message i sent you, i typed it up well but it did not turn out the way it was supposed to, ill take care of it though
