I had this idea today and wanted to know if anyone thinks it would work. It is a new kind of battle which I call Dynamic Battle. In this battle, your team initially consists of only your lead Pokémon, with no moves assigned to it. When you want to make a move, you must select it from the vast list of moves each Pokémon has (including level-up, breeding, TMs, HMs and events) and then the move you select is set - you cannot change it anymore from its slot. The other 3 slots remain open (wild-cards) until you set a move for them, the same way you did for the firts. When you want to change Pokémon, it works kinda the same way: you must choose an open slot in your team (of course, you start with your lead Pokémon and 5 open slots) and assign a Pokémon to it. You are limited to the Pokémon of the tier you are battling on (and the tiers below, of course). You must select his ability, nature and gender and, if you want, change his IVs (which are defaulted to 31) and give him an item. I still don't know if EVs should be enabled to be changed, because it can take long to adjust them and meanwhile your opponent is waiting. Then, after you choose these stuff, your Pokémon is set to the slot and none of these info can be changed. You don't attribute the moves for the Pokémon now: you do like your lead Pokémon, you choose them in the moment you make a move. Additional ideas and toughts for this battling method: - a Box with Pokémon you pre-make and can select to change to instantly without having to choose everything again. This can be a workaround to the time problem choosing EVs bring - bookmarking of moves in the movelist for easy access to the most used ones (for each Pokémon or for all? I dunno.) - limited time for building your Pokémon (2-3 minutes?). Also, I think 5 minutes won't be enough for this kind of battle. I guess 10-20 would be good - should one be able to change his IVs during battle when he selects Hidden Power? - maybe a kind of battle in which 3 Pokémon are already set and 3 are open (or other numbers you may like) - maybe one in which you also choose the moves in the moment you choose the Pokémon What do you think of it?
No. Seeing as I'm not allowed to write a post with just no in it, I'll expand a bit more. 1. It'd take far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, FAR too long to complete a battle under those rules. 2. You can't actually do this in the games. 3. It takes away a large amount of the game - prediction. I'll stop there because I only read the first paragraph. Terrible idea imo.
1. A monopoly match takes long to complete. That doesn't make it a bad game. Also, if you didn't stop at the first paragraph (which I'll assume was the first description paragraph, not the first paragraph in the whole post), you would have read that I thought of boxes and bookmarks that would make the game not that long. 2. I know. Sometimes I like to alter rules of games (not video games) to give them an interesting twist. Doesn't mean it was supposed to play this way. 3. You can still predict what your opponent is going to build based on the Pokémon he has already built and your own Pokémon make your move based on this. Imo, in should have full knowledge of something before giving your opinion, and not stopping at the first paragraph.
Seriously, mate, it's a great idea in concept, but in practicality, people would get D/C'd, they would get bored, and laddering would take forever! It's nice to see some originality in the game again, and I can appreciate you've put a lot of effort into this, but this would only really work with very commited battlers. Seriously, nice idea, but a bit impractical.
your idea has a HUGE problem: the one left with most slots open as the match progresses wins. That will make the game a fight to keep slots unused, instead of a pokemon battle.
It is possible that some fun game could be made, though there are huge problems that need to be dealt with, however: "We play the game as it is given to us, not as we want it to be.". Banning and clauseing things can improve the game and does not alter the mechanics, but the game you suggest is simply not Pokemon.
Eric, how it shows that you're also a smogon mod. But, I do agree. Also, I was just thinking that a substantial amount of programming would have to go into this kind of thing.
I'd have to disagree with the rest of the previous posters. I think it is a very interesting concept, actually. My main concern is modifying the Nature, EV's and IV's during the game. IMO it should be set to Hardy Nature, no EVs or all EVs evenly spread (won't matter either way), and equal IV's. It would just take too much time to change it, plus you got moves and pokemons to worry about choosing. I like this idea really because there are too many Pokemons already and countering every strategy with just 6 Pokemons becomes difficult. This dynamic type of battling introduces a whole new type of skill to battling, that is the ability to adapt to situations.
Holy what I was totally thinking of this exact same thing before I logged on today. O_O It would be nearly impossible to do this in the simulator, so I think where it stands the most chance is in a pen-and-paper (or keyboard and chatroom?) format. Keep damage calculators handy and write down all the "character sheets" with the stats and moves as you go along. The thing I find interesting about this is that it's similar to the Anime Metagame (which is nonexistant) in which Pokemon are not restricted to four moves and every character that isn't part of the main cast has their team made up for them on the fly. (All we'd need is custom rules like making Water Sport negate Electric resistance, and special moves like "Dodge it!" and "Aim for the horn!" and it'd be identical to battles in the show.) Of course this would just be for fun, either way. You could never make tournaments and ladders off of this.
Doesn't Challenge Cup already accomplish this? Adapting to the team your given? And everything that I want to point out was already said, so... And lol, Anime metagame.
This is a good idea, if this could somehow be faster. Sure, its not "Pokemon", but that doesn't mean it can't be fun.
