First, Tornadus's STAB Hurricane recieves great neutral coverage in the Ubers tier, as the only Ubers that resist it are Zekrom, Dialga, and Rock, Steel, and Electric Arceus. Another advantage that Tornadus has over other Ubers is priority Tailwind. Many Ubers that hover at or around 90 Base Speed will appreciate their speed doubled so that they can pummel through teams. Tornadus also has an exceptional base 111 Speed. Sets: Mixed Tailwind Lead Tornadus (M) @ Life Orb / Focus Sash Trait: Prankster EVs: 32 Atk / 224 SAtk / 252 Spd Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef) - Tailwind - Taunt - Hurricane - Hammer Arm / U-Turn Tornadus excells most in the lead position. Priority Taunt stops entry hazards, as well Dark Voids from Darkrai. Hurricane is Tornadus's STAB move, and, with Kyogre being so common, it has a great chance of never missing. Tailwind, uh, sets up Tailwind. Hammer Arm is a secondary attack, with the above EV Spread it 2HKOs Chansey and Ferrothorn. However, U-Turn can be used for scouting and retreating after Tailwind has been used. More sets coming soon. Teammates: Not only does Kyogre provide infinite rain to ensure that Hurricane never misses, but Tornadus can double Kyogre's average speed with Tailwind so that it can cause mayhem with Water Spout. Kyogre resists Tornadus's Ice weakness and Tornadus resists Kyogre's Grass weakness, however, both are weak to Electric moves, so packing many Electric resists is smart. Tornadus and Dialga have excellent synergy, plus, Tornadus can double Dialga's speed so it can finally sweep teams with its massive 150 SpA. Palkia is a great choice for a Tailwind receiver. Palkia is commonly held back by its average speed, forcing most Palkias to run a Choice Scarf. However, with a Scarf Palkia is limited to only one move. This issue is solved with Tailwind, allowing Palkia to defeat the pokemon that normally give it the blues, such as Latias and Garchomp, giving it the opportunity to sweep teams. Credit to jjfish94 for mentioning him. More teammates coming soon. So yeah, discuss Tornadus here.
I love Tornadus. In the rain it's an absolute beast. STAB Hurricane is sure to hurt anything neutral to it in ubers, aside from the obvious Chansey/Blissey. I think Palkia would be a great choice to be on the receiving end of a Tailwind. Without a scarf, Palkia is easily revenged by several uber pokemon, including lati@s and garchomp. With a scarf however, Palkia becomes a wrecking machine, revenge killing and utterly destroying slower pokemon. However this comes at the cost of being locked into one move. It is worth noting that scarf palkia is actually the most common set currently being used, so obviously speed is very important. Tailwind allows palkia to outrun all of his threats, as well as even faster pokemon. With Tailwind in effect, Palkia easily outruns every pokemon in the game that is not holding a scarf, as well as every pokemon holding a scarf that isn't named deoxys (A/S), but who uses scarf deoxys anyway? This means that some ev's can be taken out of speed with little fear of missing out on some pokemon. These ev's can either be moved to HP to boost survivability, to attack to increase the power of a mixed set. A possible set may look like: Palkia @ Lustrous Orb Trait: Pressure EVs: 16 Atk / 252 SAtk / 240 Spd Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def) - Surf - Spacial Rend - Outrage - Thunder 240 speed ev's with a neutral nature allows Palkia to outrun everything up to and including positive natured scarfed base 130's. A hasty nature can be used with some of the speed ev's moved to attack if you prefer. This means you will still reach the same speed and will have more power behind outrage, however the difference in power in the special attacks is noticeable. I like to use Lustrous Orb on this set because although it doesn't give the same amount of power as Life Orb, it still boosts 3/4 of Palkia's moves by 20% as well as coming with the added bonus of no recoil and possibly bluffing a choice set. Other abusers of Tailwind include all uber base 90's (there are a lot of them, and outspeeding the rest can often be a pain), as well as Rayquaza and Garchomp, who all greatly appreciate outspeeding their most common checks.
Palkia has average speed? 100 isn't too shabby, with the plethora of base 90s (Dialga, Reshiram, Zekrom, Groudon, Kyogre, Giratina[-O], Ho-Oh), and Rayquaza (base 95). Just about any Pokemon can abuse Tailwind, the problem is the short duration. You basically have three turns to do something; the first turn is to switch out. I think Prankster is the main attraction. Priority Taunt and Thunder Wave is nice.
Tailwind is upgraded from 3 turns to 4 turns this generation, making it much more usable. But yes, Prankster is one of the only reasons to use Tornadus in Ubers (the other being 100% accurate STAB Hurricane). I'll update this thread in a little bit.
I'm aware of the change, for the record. Also, maybe you should list advantages Tornadus has over Thundurus?
As far as I know, Tornadus has two key advantages over Thundurus, being access to Tailwind and hurricane. These few choices however, are definitely worth it in the uber environment.
Okay, sorry for any misunderstanding. The main advantages that Tornadus has over Thundurus are Tailwind and Hurricane. Plus, Tornadus's Hurricane gets much better neutral coverage in Ubers than Thundurus's Thunder.
STAB hurricane has brilliant neutral coverage, especially in the ubers tier. The only types that aren't hit at least neutrally by flying are steel, rock and electric. Very few steel types in ubers actually resist flying, due to secondary typing (bug on scizor, grass on Ferrothorn). Off the top of my head, the only common uber steels that are resistant to flying would be dialga and arceus steel. There is really only one electric type used in ubers: zekrom. As for rock, I don't really think rock turns up all too often in ubers (even arceus rock isn't used that much). As for the mentioned pokemon that can take hurricanes without too much trouble, tornados can run focus blast to hit all of them super effectively of neutrally, however imo tornados is much better off paralyising the threat and running for it's life, or simply just gtfo immediately.
THE BEST SET FOR TORNADUS IN UBERS ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SUBSTITUTE FOUL PLAY SWAGGER HURRICANE 252 SPEED/252 SPECIAL/LEFTOVERS LEFTOVERS AS ITEM
That set is terrible. Plus, I wouldn't even use Tornadus in Ubers. I'm sure it might possibly be viable, but definitely not with that set. :l
