Just a little question I found myself considering multiple times, when talking with opponents during battles. Now I ask you: which Generation was your 1st game ? when did you started playing ? to help out those not sure about the classification: Gen1 (RBY): Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Stadium. includes 151 pokemon. Gen2 (Gsc): Gold, Silver, Crystal, Stadium2. includes 251 pokemon. Gen3 (RSEFrLg): Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGree, Colosseum, XD. includes 386 poemon. Gen4 (DPPHgSs): Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Revolution. Includes 493 pokemon. Gen5 (BW): Black, White, (& counting). includes 649 pokemon.
well i 'started' in gen 1, but even as a kid i hated the gen I games so I sorta gave up real quick on them. I properly started in gen II, when the games started being amazing.
Gen 3 - Emerald. I gotta agree with Archerknight, Emerald was endlessly entertaining. I loved it from the beginning, and it looks like I came in at the right time, too. In my opinion, Emerald was probably the best Pokemon game up until HG/SS. R/S lacked the cool battle animations, and 2nd and 1st gen had chunkier graphics. D/P was pretty good, but half the Pokemon were evolutions of previous ones, and it still had less new Pokemon than the previous 3 generations. HG/SS had smoother graphics, a better storyline than D/P/Pt, the ability to catch the Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 legendary Pokemon, and the Pokewalker was funny in its coolness and weirdness.
I started in Gen 1, and its always fun pulling out the old game boy colour and abusing the first gen mechanics. And spam psychic types of course. I reckon either 2nd gen games or emerald were the best. 2nd gen had a massive amount of scope comparatively with the 16 gyms badges but the battle frontier WAS amazing.
The first Pokemon game I played was Gen 2, IIRC, but it was Gen 3 that I really started to become crazy about it. Albeit, both were only short instances as I didn't have my own games; I had to use other's on family get-togethers. :P Gen 4 was when I got my own game.
Gen 3 - R/B was the first generation of games I got. I must say, the transition from 2nd to 3rd gen was the largest.
Red was my first game, gen 1 was my first gen. Also, I edited the title of the poll so that it made more sense.
Pokemon Sapphire. After beating the game, I went back and beat the other games, especially screwing around with glitch Pokemon in Blue. Started competitive battling in July 2010 for Gen 4.
Gen 2! Gold was my first Pokemon game (which was on an emulator sadly). I also went back to Gen 1 after that and then bought a GBA for Emerald. The latest Pokemon game I have played is Diamond. I might buy HeartGold this May.......yeah, I get to stuff quite late........ Went competitive at the ending stages of Gen 4, somewhere around the start of May 2010.
Gen 1 kicked heavy ass. I still get gallons of nostalgia from thinking about running through Ghost Tower with Vaporeon, and fighting the Elite Four multiple times with only a Jolteon and the traded Mimien. Gen 2 gives me some good gameplay nostalgia, especially with the revisited Kanto, but Gen 3 was when I really started, I think. It was when I first played competitively, and built my first EV trained team in-game. But I'll always remember the r/b/y games the best, if only for their cool-ass sprites.
Gen 3, The first Pokemon game I played was FireRed, but I soon fell in love with by far the greatest Pokemon game IMO Emerald :3 I THINK I played Crystal(I see so many comments here) before, but I didn't know what Pokemon was back then :) I started competitive in 2007 (Wow I've been at it long :P) back when I was still playing the JAP version of D/P, found PO prior a few weeks before gen 5 was released, I was hooked on /tr/ server ;)
Blue was when I started playing the game, and I had my first competitive games on Pokemon Yellow (that was my first time making a team with the intent of beating others) and Stadium in non-official tours and stuff (It was practically with "friends", more like a gathering of people who played pokemon to play competitively: I told a friend, he told someone else, etc etc, we gathered a lot of people actually). We practically made up our rules on our own, like the pretty obvious ones (Mew and Mewtwo banned, etc.). I had a break after that though, and only restarted playing competitively in Platinum thanks to simulators. Link Cables for life.
gen 2- crystal version was my first game tho i didn't start competitive play till after the release of platinum.
DAWG GEN 1 FOR LIFE!!! Though I stopped playing after RSE and didn't start playing again until HG/SS. Pidgeot is my bro, don't hate.
For me, it was Gen1. I have such fond memories of those games. They were the only games my brother and I could play without trying to kill each other.
Gen 1, 5 years old and I got a Gameboy color for my birthday, along with Pokemon Blue. And I still haven't got over Pokemon, lol.
I got my Game Boy color on my 6th birthday, and a few months later I got Pokemon Red. Gen 1 for the win bro. I've owned(In the physical cartridge): Red/Yellow Silver/Crystal Ruby/Emerald HeartGold I'm getting Gen 5 too for the laughs...
Generation 1 Pokemon Yellow :3 And i've owned in physical cartridges: Red/Yellow/Blue Gold/Silver/Crystal Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald Firered/Leafgreen Diamond/Pearl/Platinum Heartgold/Soulsilver Black EDIT: LOL, that was all of them! xD
I bought my GameBoy Color and Pokémon Blue in May 2001. Gen 1, that is. Wow, it's been already 10 years of Pokémon for me o_O
lol, just realized I haven't voted yet XD. like most of you (expected more variety really ^^), I too started back at Gen1 (on an emulator). Emulated Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal (got to love the power to rewind history (F5+F6 remember?), nostalgia...), Than got me the newest gameboy and version out (GBC & Silver lol), and later got me Red, Gold (2 by mistake ^^), Crystal, Ruby, & LeafGreen. Retired after the net battle crushed, until the PO started.
I clicked GSC, even though technically Stadium was my first game. I got my first game boy after I realised I needed a game to plug into Stadium. How disappointed I was when I realised you HAD to have Red, Blue, or Yellow. How long did it take for me to buy all three?
I started with gen1 I have been a pokemon trainer since i was 4 seriously I played red and blue at 4 years old I still remember catching a doduo i wanted realy bad Then it soon evolved into a dodrio I cant believe i actualy remember that
