With the release of Generation 7, new features have been added to Pokémon Online (PO), so it's time for a new Windows Guide! For those just getting started on PO with the Windows client, this guide should explain the basics.

    Connecting to the Server
    Server List
After opening Pokémon Online you will be brought to the server selection page. The Pokémon Online server is the main server. Just insert your name and double click on the server to connect.

    Registering, Rules, and Commands
After joining a server, you will be in the main channel. The main channel for Pokémon Online is Tohjo Falls. The first thing you should do is click the Register button to secure your name; then type the /rules command in the chat to read the server rules. Other useful commands will be explained throughout the guide, but you can type /commands to see a list of other things you can do. Note that commands start with “/” and you type them in the chat.

    Player List
The player list, which lists the players in a particular channel, can be found on the left. A red Pokéball means the player is active and able to receive challenges, a gray Pokéball means the player is inactive and will automatically reject challenges, and a blue Pokéball means the player is already battling. Great, Ultra, and Master balls mean the player is a Moderator, Administrator, or Owner, respectively, and those are the users you should talk to if you need any help. You can see a list of them by typing /auth in the chat.

    Teambuilding
    Opening the Teambuilder
Use the Open Teambuilder button to access the Teambuilder. Alternatively, click File on the top menu and then Open Teambuilder, or you can simply press Ctrl + O.

    Customizing Your Profile
This is the Teambuilder. On the left you can customize your profile by changing your avatar, your trainer info, and the messages other people will receive when you lose or win a battle. Your trainer info is what everyone will see when clicking on your name. It can be very simple, but if you want to make something cool, you can follow Cirno's guide to personalising your trainer info. You can use the Color button to change the color that your username will be in the player list and the chat. Remember to click Save Profile when you're done!

    Adding Pokémon To Your Team
To start building your team just click on one of the Missingnos. Next, click on the big question mark to choose your Pokémon. If you want a specific forme, such as an Alolan forme, just click on Alternate Formes, and pick the one you want to use. Here you can also make your Pokémon shiny. Once you've chosen your Pokémon, click Change Species.

Now you can choose the nickname, gender, moves, item, ability, nature, EVs, IVs, and Hidden Power type (if applicable). If you want to make a Pokémon Mega Evolve, give it its appropriate Mega Stone, and a Mega Evolve button will appear in battle! We also offer the possibility to play with Hackmons, which means you can give your Pokémon any move or ability with max EVs in each stat, as if they were obtained in game by hacking. Obviously, by choosing to play in this format you will only face other people playing Hackmons and not people who want to play by the normal rules. To enable Hackmons, go to Options, and check Show Illegal. Click here to read more about Hackmons.

Mega Stones and Z-Crystals can be added as hold items as seen below.

    Importing and Exporting Teams
You can also import an already existing team that you might have found somewhere else or received from a friend. To do so just select Team and then Import Team, and paste the importable version of your team. To receive the importable of your own team, you can go to Team and then Export Team. Alternatively, you can type /importable in the main chat, and you will be given a temporary link to the importable. If you have multiple teams loaded, you can select which team to get an importable of by adding the position, such as /importable 3. Note that the numbering starts at 0 and goes up to 5 if you had 6 teams loaded.

Setting the Generation and Info About Tiers
You can make a team for different generations, but keep in mind that the most played tiers use the Sun / Moon generation. Tiers are basically groups in which Pokémon are divided depending on their usage. The most popular tiers are typically SM OU and SM Ubers. Click here for an updated list of our tiers! If you’d like a more detailed explanation of tiers, check out A Guide to Tiers.

    Saving, Loading, and Organizing Teams
Once you've finished building your team, give it a name and press the save icon next to it. You can have up to six teams loaded at the same time, but you can save as many as you want. Just use the load icon next to the save icon to load a different team. The trash bin icon can be used to remove team slots if you don’t want to reduce the number of slots you have loaded. Now click File > Save All and click X Close (at the bottom) to get back to the server.

    Selecting a Tier
Next, pick the tier or tiers you want to play. You can change tiers from the Tiers option in the top menu or by typing /changetier [tier]. Both work, but the former is recommended. You can also try fun tiers such as Challenge Cup and Battle Factory, which will automatically provide you a randomly generated team. In Challenge Cup, sets are completely random, and in Battle Factory, the teams are still randomized, but the sets are competitive sets. There are also Side Metagames such as Monotype, Monogen, SM 1v1, 3v3 Singles, and Middle Cup. Just try them out, and find the one you enjoy the most.

    Battling
    Searching for Battles
Click the Find Battle button to quickly start a battle against a random player on the server. If that takes too long, you can try and challenge a player who has a red Pokéball. Right-click on their name, and click Challenge, but if they decline, don't keep bothering them!

    How to Challenge Other Players
When challenging someone you might find someone who has multiple teams loaded as well. Choose the tier you want to challenge them to from the list next to their name, and pick the team you want to use from the ones you have loaded. On the right, you can set the clauses (if you don't know what those are, click the spoiler below) and change the battle format (i.e. Singles, Doubles). When you're ready, click Challenge.

    Clauses
Clauses are basically restrictions or particular rules, which will be applied to the battle. Here is what each of them does:

Sleep Clause*: No more than one Pokémon on each team can be put to sleep at the same time.
Freeze Clause: No more than one Pokémon on each team may be frozen at the same time.
Disallow Spectators: Prevents other players from spectating the battle.
Item Clause: There cannot be two or more Pokémon on each team holding the same item.
Challenge Cup: Players will be given a team consisting of random Pokémon with random moves, items, and stats.
No Timeout: There will be no timer in the battle, meaning players will be free to take as much time as they want.
Species Clause*: No more than one Pokémon with the same Pokédex number may be put on the same team.
Team Preview*: Players are allowed to see each other's team before the battle starts.
Self-KO Clause*: If both player's last Pokémon faint in the same turn, the battle will not end in a tie, but the winner will be decided depending on how the Pokémon fainted.
Inverted Battle: Type effectiveness is reversed, meaning Fire will be super effective against Water and weak to Grass and so on. Click here to see the full type chart for inverted battles. Note that for Generation 7 (Sun / Moon), Inverted Challenge Cup and Hackmons Inverted CC are the only tiers that uses the Inverted Battle clause.

*Clauses with an asterisk are typically enabled in ladder battles.

    Battle Window and Team Preview
If they accept your challenge, or if you find a battle against a random opponent, the Battle Window will pop up. You can customize some aspects of your battle window in the Battle Options from the top menu.

Now if Team Preview is enabled, you will have the possibility to change the Pokémon that will be sent out first. Just swap it with the first Pokémon in your party.

    Battling and Mega Evolution
To battle, simply click moves, or go to Pokémon if you want to switch to another Pokémon. If you hold your cursor on a move or a Pokémon, you will see some information about them in the tooltip. If your Pokémon holds a Mega Stone, you will also see the Mega Evolve button, and it will Mega Evolve at the start of the next turn if you click the button and then choose a move. Note that you can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon per battle.

    Rated Battles and Ladders
If when clicking Find Battle you checked Force Rated Battle, you will receive or lose ladder points depending on the result of the battle. Each tier has a ladder, which is the ranking that results from comparing the ladder points of each player who has played rated battles for that tier. At the beginning of the battle, you will see a message telling you how many points you will gain/lose, such as Variation: +17, -15. To see your ranking and ladder points in a tier, type /ranking in the main chat, or to see the complete ladder, right-click on your name in the player list and then click View Ranking.

    Z-Moves
To use Z-Moves, first make sure that you equip the proper Z-Crystal in the Teambuilder. In order to use a Z-Move, the Z-Crystal has to be the same type as the move that will be used as the Z-Move. Special Z-Crystals, such as Eevium Z, only work with a specific Pokémon and a specific move. Click here see a list of Z-Moves.

With the proper Z-Crystal equipped, you should see a Z Move button beneath the moves. Clicking the Z Move button will reveal the possible Z-Moves that can be used, and you can click the Z-Move to use it. Note that Z-Moves can only be used once per battle.

    Additional Topics
    Private Messages (PMs) and Channels
Battling is not all that PO has to offer! You can just chat with people and make new friends. You can start a private conversation with someone by right-clicking their name and clicking Send Message. PO has multiple channels where you can discuss various topics, and you can even create your own channels. You can see a list of existing channels by clicking Channels on top of the player list on the left, but you can also join a channel by typing /cjoin [name of the channel] in the main chat. If there is no existing channel with that name, a new channel will be created, and you can make it yours by typing /register. After that, have a look at /commands channel to see what else you can do.

    Server Games
PO has official side channels where you can play different games, which are #Tournaments, #Hangman, #Trivia, #Mafia and #Safari.
    • In the #Tournaments channel, tournaments for various tiers can be played. By winning tournaments, players earn points for the Tournaments leaderboard, and the top 3 players on the leaderboards for each month can win forum badges!
    • In the #Hangman channel, you can play the classic Hangman word game.
    • In the #Trivia channel, you can test your Trivia knowledge in a variety of categories, including Pokémon, of course. Players who finish first on each Trivia leaderboard for each month can win forum badges!
    • In the #Mafia channel, you can play Mafia games from a variety of themes.
    • In the #Safari channel, you can try to catch wild Pokémon that appear as you try to catch them all. Winning events in other side channels will allow you to earn prizes for Safari as well.
Just try them out to see which channel fits you best!
If you have additional questions not answered by this guide, check out the index of guides for additional guides, or make a thread in the Help subforum.

Special thanks to @Atli, since this guide was updated from his v2.6 Windows guide.
