I was thinking while in an argument with MegaBeedrill on the server that some generations of Pokemon get huge amounts of hate that can easily be counter pointed. So my question stands: What Pokemon generation do you think gets the most undeserved hate? I'll start things off:

In my opinion I think it's Gen 5.
Counter argument : "They started running out of ideas with the names and designs"
With this argument there is a bad early gen pokemon for each bad new gen pokemon.
    Pidove? - Pidgey
    Patrat? - Rattata
    Throh? - Machop
    Sewaddle? - Weedle.

imo pokemon designs have gotten more polarising as the gens have progressed- newer pokemon that have a good design look really cool, while those that are bad are really bad. By contrast bad designs in say gen 1, aren't as jarringly bad it's more that it's a question of "what's so good about this pokemon design"

It's like a question of say Vanilluxe (or Garbodor) vs Muk- both are pretty mediocre ideas for a pokemon design, but one is clearly more awful than the other

RBY sometimes gets a bad rap for being a haxfest, but it's still loads of fun, a good meta, and one where the better player still usually wins. On top of that, outside the many mechanic quirks it's really easy to pick up imo

tbh I think a trash heap is more creative than a pile of goo but that's beside the point........

RBY has the problem of the special and only having 151 pokemon to play with but I guess I can't complain. I think the newer gens are better for new players and old players because the main series game have become easier but in turn there are more facilities for competitive players. Although I still hold my stance on playing the 1st gen, then 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th and finally 6th because you get to see the changes and get to decide properly what gen you like best.

I do think the designs have always been polarising but I do agree that they have become more polarising. Like, you have Pidove, a pidgeon but you also have Volcarona, an atlas moth who rose to the sun in times of darkness and became the re-incarnation of it. There is clearly a huge divide but I just think that the earlier gens didn't really have much that was great, just ok.

I personally agree on Gen 5 getting the most undeserved hate too. While imo it probably was their least inspired generation - the storyline was... passable, but the majority of characters were easily forgotten, and aside from N, Rosa, Hilda and Skyla, I couldn't much care about any of them.

However, people forget that Gen 5 created an entire new region of pokemon without any pokemon from previous generations. It's therefore understandable that they'd have their own versions of Pidgey, Rattata, Machop, Geodude etc, because the geography of the Unova region would require something to fill in that geographical niche. And thus similar pokemon were born. Not all that creative, but still great in their own way.

Granted, of those, only Conkeldurr would be considered 'superior' to their Kanto equivalent, with everything else being NU rejects, but hey. they're still good pokemon if you use them properly.

As for Garbodor and Vanilluxe... yes, they're a bit bland in terms of creativity. But they're surprisingly fun to play with, and I for one love Garbodor. It just ties teams together so well in lower tiers, and for a fucking bag of trash, it's designed really damn well, particularly Trubbish.

...so yeah, gen 5 imo. Gen 3 is overrated due to that being when the majority of today's 'fans' started on these games, gen 1 is overrated due to it being the 'originals', gen 4 is largely forgotten because of the huge inclusion of lazy evolutions, like Yanmega, Togekiss, Rhyperior etc (they're great pokemon, but far from great ideas imo), gen 6 is the new guy, so we're still judging it right now, and gen 2 is that balance between nostalgia and new, where it still feels old timey, but is far less glitchy and haxxy than gen 1.

All over YouTube, all PokėTubers say 5, me included, (I'm not a PokėTuber, just saying I agree) so, 5. For reasons stated in above posts.
