Split Subgens into Mechanics and Releases

    I know it's akward to do, but ideally you should be able to play with released Pokémon, items, moves and abilities etc. (subject to restrictions) from a later game in a generation (and corresponding events) on an earlier game's mechanics (e.g. most HGSS stuff on DP mechanics). 1st gen Tradebacks is an example where this even crosses generation.

    Does stuff really change that much between games in a generation outside of 1 and maybe 2?

    between games you always have tutor moves and event moves gained, e.g. between XY and ORAS, or BW1 and BW2.

    Furthermore there are still significant mechanic changes in gen 4 even, key ones involving glitches like pursuit, u-turn, acid rain, etc.

    No idea in terms of how to code this, but in the GUI perhaps one could have under the Teambuilder's options:
    "Advanced Menu"
    "Allow Tradebacks"
    "Show Illegal"

    You would probably just need to take the releasedPokes, releasedItems, etc. from the highest subgen in the generation, except for gen 1/2 tradebacks, which I guess would need to be a special case?

    Moves don't matter, because in that case you might as well just play highest game in the generation. It's only mechanics that are important and for Gen 4 on PO, I don't know of any outside of Hypnosis tbh (PO has kept clear of most glitches outside of RBY), Gen 5 and 6 I don't know of any mechanics that changed between games and I don't know enough about 2/3 to make a comment on.
