Assistance with making DB mods into a separate generation & editing items

    So, I was wondering. When making database mods - if I wanted to keep Generation 6's default changes, but also have the database mods available at the same time, would that be possible? And how would one go about changing items and/or their effects (e.g increasing the type boosting items from 10% to 30%)? Would that require source code intervention? I unfortunately have little knowledge of C++.
