So now that Misdreavus has been banned, what do you do if you want a powerful Ghost-type on your team? Call Gastly, one of the most powerful Special Attackers in Little Cup. Its awesome base 100 Special Attack is only (narrowly) beaten by Abra and Solosis, and thanks to Steel-types not resisting Ghost moves in Gen VI, it can hit all of the tier bar Pawniard and Stunky for neutral damage with just its STABs. Indeed, STAB Sludge Bomb sets it apart from other Ghosts in LC, as it gives Gastly a way to hit bulky Normal-types hard. Although Gastly tragically misses out on being able to hit the coveted 19 Speed tier it's still fast enough to hit 18, which is good enough. Levitate and Ghost typing give it three solid immunities to Normal, Fighting and Ground-type moves. Unfortunately, while Gastly's ability to cause damage is among the best in the tier, its defences are absolutely pitiful. Being weak to Knock Off is rather a handicap in LC these days, and Gastly has a severe case of 4 move slot syndrome so it always misses out on hitting something. Nonetheless, if you'd like a Ghost-type for your team, or just a powerful special attacker, you'd be a fool not to consider Gastly. All Out Attacker Gastly @ Life Orb / Berry Juice Trait: Levitate EVs: 36 Def / 196 SAtk / 72 SDef / 196 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd -Atk) / Modest Nature (+Satk, -Atk) - Shadow Ball - Sludge Bomb - Dazzling Gleam / Hidden Power Fighting - Substitute / Destiny Bond This set does what Gastly does best: smash holes in the opponent's team. Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb get STAB and 2HKO most things that don't resist them. Dazzling Gleam OHKOes Scraggy every time and Eviolite Mienfoo most of the time. Hidden Power Fighting can be used to OHKO Pawinard, who would otherwise wall this set. Substitute allows Gastly to evade a Sucker Punch and gives it a shield from status. Destiny Bond can be used to allow Gastly to take an opponent down with it when its time is up. The EVs are straightforward, simply maximising Speed and Special Attack with defences both buffed another point. If you're running Hidden Power Fighting, use a set up of 80 Def / 200 SAtk / 200 Spd to compensate for the negative IVs. As for items, use Berry Juice if you're running Substitute as Life Orb recoil will wear it down very quickly. Use a Life Orb otherwise for extra damage. A Timid nature is recommended so you can outpace +Speed Mienfoo and Chinchou, however a Modest Nature does allow Gastly to hit noticeably harder. If you don't need Substitute or Destiny Bond, Energy Ball or Giga Drain could be used in its place to hit the bulky Water and Ground-types in the tier. Energy Ball is more powerful, while Giga Drain heals Life Orb recoil. Choice Scarf Gastly @ Choice Scarf Trait: Levitate EVs: 36 Def / 196 SAtk / 72 SDef / 200 Spd Modest Nature (+Satk, -Atk) / Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Shadow Ball - Sludge Bomb - Dazzling Gleam / Hidden Power Fighting - Trick / Destiny Bond Although this set looks very similar to the last, they play very differently. The first set is supposed to smash holes in the opponent's team, while the Choice Scarf set is designed to be a revenge killer and late-game cleaner. Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb again serve as the STAB moves. Dazzling Gleam hits the likes of Vullaby and Scraggy harder, while Hidden Power Fighting hits Pawniard. Trick is recommended in the last slot to turn defensive Pokémon into set-up fodder. On the other hand Destiny Bond allows Gastly to take a would-be sweeper with it if it can't bring it down. Again, the EVs maximise Speed and Special Attack while boosting its defences another point each. Modest nature is preferred to hit harder, but if you don't feel like risking a Speed tie with the likes of Scarf Chinchou and Mienfoo, you could run a Timid nature. If you choose Hidden Power Fighting, use a set up of 80 Def / 200 SAtk / 200 Spd to compensate for the negative IVs. Team Options Sweepers like Tirtouga, Swords Dance Fletchling and Agility Porygon can take advantage of the holes the all-out-attacker set creates. Bulky Normal-types are problematic for Gastly, so strong Fighting-types are always handy. Mienfoo, Timburr and Scraggy are good candidates. They can also demolish Pawniard, who walls Gastly that lack Hidden Power Fighting. Drilbur can set up Stealth Rock to help Gastly get more KOs, and it can OHKO Pawniard and Stunky with its STAB Earthquake. Lickitung is immune to Ghost moves, can pass large Wishes to keep Gastly healthy and can use Knock Off to remove Eviolite. Gastly is also immune to the Fighting moves Lickitung draws in. Other Options Gastly can imitate its evolution with a set using Substitute and Disable to cripple walls and Pokémon that only have 1 move that affects Gastly. Eviolite can be used on the All Out Attacker set, but Gastly will still be frail and it will miss the power of a Life Orb or the healing of Berry Juice. While it does have access to Sucker Punch and Knock Off, its Attack stat is pitiful. You could run a Focus Sash on the All Out Attacker set, but Life Orb and Berry Juice are still the more superior options. A Focus Sash set is also executed better by Abra, who doesn't need Defog/Rapid Spin to keep its Sash intact thanks to Magic Guard. Gastly can use Trick Room to some degree, but Pumpkaboo, which is bulkier and can use Explosion to bring a teammate in safely, usually outclasses it although Gastly is more powerful. Psychic hits Fighting-types and opposing Poison-types hard, but Gastly simply can't fit it in. Thunderbolt hits Vullaby harder than anything else, but Dazzling Gleam already 2HKOes it. Checks and Counters Bulky Normal-types in general are the best checks. Defensive Porygon can cripple with Thunder Wave, or do massive damage with its own Shadow Ball. Lickitung can avoid a 2HKO from Sludge Bomb most of the time if hazards aren't down, and OHKO with Knock Off. Defensive Munchlax isn't 2HKOed by any of Gastly's moves, and OHKOes with Pursuit. However, all of them will hate being Tricked a Choice Scarf. Faster Pokémon that can hit Gastly super-effectively like Abra can usually take it one on one, but most can't switch in. Pawniard resists both STABs and can checkmate Gastly with Sucker Punch and Pursuit, but will be OHKOed by Hidden Power Fighting. Eviolite Mold Breaker Drilbur can OHKO with Earthquake, while avoiding a OHKO from anything apart from a Life Orb boosted Energy Ball. Shadow Ball will 2HKO though. Stunky resists both STABs, isn't bothered about Dazzling Gleam and Hidden Power Fighting, and can checkmate Gastly with Sucker Punch and Pursuit.
Oh look this isn't dead On the life orb set you REALLY need to slash substitute first in front of destiny bond. This helps evade sucker punches and get a free hit off when forcing a switch. In OO you don't need to remention Will-o-wisp . Mention that gastly gets knock off for all those adventurous players. I'd argue that focus sash COULD go in OO but i'll leave this to you and other QC's (if there are any left lol) to decide. Remove the mention of the stall breaker set because there is literally no reason to use it ever. Gastly hits hard enough to break a lot of walls Spoiler 196 SpA Life Orb Gastly Sludge Bomb vs. 196 HP / 76+ SpD Eviolite Lickitung: 9-13 (32.1 - 46.4%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO 196+ SpA Life Orb Gastly Sludge Bomb vs. 196 HP / 76+ SpD Eviolite Lickitung: 12-16 (42.8 - 57.1%) -- 12.1% chance to 2HKO Sludge bomb doesn't 2HKO lickitung unless a modest nature and that's only if lickitung isn't specially defensive so its BETTER than porygon at walling gastly. And to make these points one, just group porygon, lickitung and munchlax together as bulky normal that wall gastly. For the abra set just say that all abra can revege LO gastly, but only sash for scarf gastly. Life orb is just as viable as sash~ Seeing as timburr is never OHKO'd by dazzling gleam, mention that mienfoo fears modest dazzling gleam more so than timburr Drilbur deserves a mention since its only OHKO'd by giga drain (and who runs that lol) and kills with mold breaker EQ Probably missed something so i'll probably revisit this~
Just point out that drillbur is OhkoED by giga drain/energy ball (i run EB) only with the LO set. I use a scarf set (4 attacks) and i can't ohko, while obv it can ohko in return. (95% max iirc) I think that Energy Ball is worth a mention at least in OO for the scarf set, since it hits harder than giga drain (and gastly isn't that bulky, it hardly survives even neutral hits.) A timid nature on the scarf set? Isn't a bit an overkill? I think that you can slash the modest nature. Timburr is 2hkoED by dazzling gleam (both sets), so it can't switch in so easily; sash is worth a mention in OO, IMHO. Iynhe
OK, recent changes Changed the Life Orb set's name to All Out Attacker, slashed in Substitute and Berry Juice as the item. With a Life Orb and Substitute, Gastly gets worn down very quickly so Berry Juice is helpful Mentioned Knock Off alongside Sucker Punch in OO Mentioned Energy Ball in OO Removed stallbreaker set and all mention of Will-O-Wisp from OO Mentioned Munchlax in C&C, made it, Porygon and Likitung all one bullet point Mentioned Eviolite Drilbur in C&C Removed Mienfoo and Timburr from C&C. Mienfoo is OHKOd by Life Orb Dazzling Gleam most of the time if Gastly's modest, and Timburr is 2HKOd by Sludge Bomb and Dazzling Gleam so at best it's a soft check Might slash Modest nature on the Scarf set, since Clamperl's not so common now there aren't that many base 13 Speed Pokémon. Undecided, will run calcs.
Kay so APPARENTLY i'm the only QC left so at this point imma open the floor to discussion on the sets. SO if anyone has any comments feel free to say something. Course if its fucking retarded I reserve the right to call you out on it
So I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things, but here goes. Mention that it has trick room and can use it to some degree. While it's absolute lowest speed is 11 which isn't ideal, a sash lead can make a good suicide setter while making use of its high speed rather than low for attacks before setting(which isn't good but eh we need more good TR setters imo). A bulkier eviolite spread can run TR but it's not ideal, or even that good. I'll throw out infestation just for the sake of mentioning it. Trapping moves are great sometimes, and infestation is good. Add don't add it, its just an idea. Mention Sludge Wave as an alternate over Sludge Bomb. It gets a bit more damage in a few cases for the loss of the high poison chance. The most notable difference is on bulky Chinchou where it becomes a 50% chance for an OHKO. That's all I could come up with.
Sludge wave isn't legal at level 5~ I'd be in favor of adding infestation to trap random things but mention gastlys frailness kinda screws this up Course I'm completely against tr getting mentioned mostly because pumpkaboo and phantumb do the whole setter/suicide lead thing better cuz bulk+slow+explosion/ harvest
OK, recent changes: Life Orb Now named All Out Attacker Substitute Slashed in first with Destiny Bond Berry Juice slashed in with Life Orb Energy Ball / Giga Drain mentioned in set comments Choice Scarf Slashed Modest nature Added Team Options section Other Options Mentioned Trick Room Mentioned Infestation Mentioned Eviolite
@Rioku and @Chlorine Trifluoride I can't think of anything else that needs changing or adding ATM, so would you guys mind giving it a look over please? Thanks in advance.
Life orb should be slashed in front of BJ in CC mention pursuit munchlax rather than crunch because i've never seen crunch and Abra could just be grouped as faster pokemon since gastly aint gonna take hits Otherwise you can consider this Approved~
I would argue modest over timid on the scarf set as Gastly doesn't really need any more speed, hitting 17 on a neutral nature. You only gain one important speed advantage and that is over scarf timid Chinchou which is so stupidly rare it shouldn't matter in the slightest, and Chinchou usually wins 1v1 if not running grass moves, and another note, modest pretty much guarantees the OHKO on Chinchou while its only 50% if timid. Dwebble will always out speed at +2 and turtle has priority. Clamperl and unburden users aren't relevant enough to warrant serious caution, and scarf Carvanah will out speed after one turn anyways, so the speed tie won't play to much, not that anyone runs scarf... Just a thought. Approved.
