I think we all know what the major problem in Mafia is. We don't have a lot of players and are described as dead. The maximum number of players I saw in the last two months was 22. And 10 of the players were Mafia Staff (Admin, QC or Tutor). We should actually make the channel alive and have more than the usual 15-18 players. The years before, this period usually had more than 30 players every time I logged in. So we should try to achieve that goal and get new players, and bring back old players.
The main idea of this project is to make Mafia more popular and make Mafia at least the the 4th Top Channel and our goal is the 3rd.
Use this thread to describe ideas how we can do this and then we will plan how we will do it. We shouldn't be making all themes possible nonpeak because playing themes in Peak is way better.

Like I said in the other thread, the main issue is that everyone is still in school. I know on my end is the last week for seniors and we have some finals do to still after 2 weeks of AP testing. However, I won't deny that we have dipped down since the great theme purge. While it has made our channel somewhat smarter, it most likely sucked out the main component of the game: insane fun. What I mean by that is in the past, with themes like Vepix, people were able to sweep into the channel and have a simple free-for-all, attracting users into the channel. I'm not saying we need to fully revert to those times but when the channel is as dead as it is, maybe reintroducing some of these themes (Vepix, Daypix, Popularity, Castle) wouldn't be so bad.

In fact, forget the blackjack. And the Mafia too.

    @Thread:
People have been saying "Mafia is slow because this and that" for over 1 month now. In the past years, no matter the period of the year, Mafia has never been as dead as this.

If you want one reasons for mafia dying, it's because the channel is unable to gather new players. When someone that never played mafia joins the channel, they have almost no information available to teach them how to actually play (no, /help is not even remotely enough). Then they may try to join a game or not even before learning how to play, and regardless of the outcome there, they will likely be told they need #Mafia Tutoring. Then they join the channel, which is dead, and may get sent to the Mafia Tutoring on the forums. For the few people that persevere and try registering on the forums and signing for the Mafia Tutoring, they end having to wait 2 weeks to get a tutor, and by then they already gave up on the game.

The solution? We need an actual "How to play Mafia" guide. A guide easy to read, that actually tells them what the channel is about.

Of course, some people will say "screw tutoring" and try to learn by playing, which is not a bad thing, but can often lead to players that fail way too often, which can easily disencourage other players from playing.
(Actually, we need 3 Mafia Guides: A beginner-level guide, an advanced-level guide and a "How to learn about themes" guide. But at the very least, we need a Beginner guide).

Yes, this is not the only reason for mafia being so slow. It may (and probably will) get a bit better regardless of any action taken in a few weeks, but those guides can do a great good on the long run.

Non-Peak themes have their importance regardless of Mafia going through a dead week or not.

hi so im just going to make one reference to this post and move on with life

I agree to this, to some extent atleast.
In regards to Mafia Tutoring, yes, the channel is dead.
Roild and I's tutors do go out of their way, from what I can tell, to tutor people who honestly have no clue as to what they are doing.
As of late, yes tutors have been short, and we have been slow with assigning because lolexams, but beforehand both Roild and I were very on top of assigning tutors, and when we couldn't we would tutor them ourselves, which we should anyway.

honestly we could get a group together and write a guide, but what exactly is going to make people want to look at it? I mean, it's there for Tournaments as well, but we see how often people look at those.

Lol comparing mafia to tours . Really?

Agreeing with the guides thing . Especially how to play this certain theme guide. The channel dies only because new players fail, fail hard , and fail repeatedly and it kills all the fun. This discourages the new players from joining repeatedly since others call them out for being noobs and it prevents others in general from joining as everyone hates a new player throwing the game for their respective side

And no comparing it to tours is just bad as all they have to learn is to type /join w/right tier . If they cant chall their opponent will challenge them to start the battle.
This is not the case for mafia
The interaction in mafia is different and I'd think people would certainly read the beginners and the theme guide at the very least to prevent others from calling them out that they suck and should not play etc etc .

Some people join mafia and don't even know the game's goal. Other people have no idea about what a Night or Standby phase is. Or have no idea how to find if role X is good or bad. Etc.
The difference from tours is that Mafia is not a main part of PO, it's almost a completely different dimension. There's way more information necessary simply for basic play.
Also, having a guide is better than not having. Even if few people actually read it, we can at least know those people are willing to put that little effort to learn the game, and are likely going to be healthy addition to the mafia players base.

If you guys need a beginner's guide, I could write it up for you guys by the end of the day. I have a few classes today where we have laptops on top of computer access before school, shouldn't be terribly hard. I plan on touching on basic mafia roles (Villy, Insp, BG, etc) and the cycles.

EDIT: Here's the guide that I've written up. Tell me if it's missing anything for a beginner's guide.

So, you wanna learn how to play Mafia huh? Well, despite physical appearances, you just have to play a few games in order to learn the flow of the game! However, since you are starting out, I'll go ahead and tell you about the essentials of a typical Mafia game.

    Roles

Roles are the main structure of the game, often shaping what can be done and how. No matter what theme you're playing though, the PR structure is pretty similar with slight deviances. Now, what is a PR you ask? A PR is a power role, or a role that gets an action outside of a vote. I'll now break down for you some of the major roles seen in our themes.

    Common Village Roles
Villager - This role is very, very basic. You don't get anything outside of a vote as this role, so you're essentially being a sheep, but if needed you can rand (will explain later).
Millager - Just like the villager, but inspects as a Mafia member/side to throw the inspector off and giving the Mafia power. Does not typically know he is a Millager to start.
Inspector - This role is usually the centerpiece of a theme, only typically outdone by the Samurai. During the night, this person will type /inspect [name]. This command allows the user to see what role someone is. For example, let's say in the Default theme I was a Villager and the Inspector inspects me. He will be able to then "clean" me and know I'm not the bad guy.
Bodyguard - Since an inspector without his protection would turn into a very sloppy and dangerous game, the bodyguard is able to /protect [name] one person during the night, typically being someone besides himself. This role is perhaps the most critical supportive role in the game, as only he can keep the main village information sender safe.
Pretty Lady - This role is able to distract one person during the night using /distract [name]. That is, the person distracted is unable to perform their action (if they have any) along with anyone else that shares the command with that user. You must be careful with this command in certain themes though due to certain roles killing the distractor when distracted, such as the Werewolf in Default, Rem in Death Note (DN), and Kefka in Final Fantasy (FF).
Spy - Though he has no commands, the spy is able to recieve hax (lucky info) on people using commands, most typically the /kill [name] command. The Spy can usually see who is dying by what side and, on occasion, who is doing the killing. This is the most critical passive role as it can save time for the inspector and make the game much more efficient.
Mayor - This role usually falls along the lines of a villager in importance, but has an alternative vote from the typical +1, such as +2 or -2 (not -1). This role, however, becomes extremely important late in the game due to the low count of people and every vote having that much more of an impact.
Vigilante - This role can kill, but is sided with the good guys. During the night, he can use /kill [name] on someone to remove them from the game. The role will usually have to gut on gut instinct, but just as often the leader of the group (whether it be the inspector, samurai, spy, or pretty lady) will have some info to guide his kills in the right direction.
Samurai - This role, when around, often overshadows the Inspector in important. The Samurai is able to kill someone during the day using /kill [name]. He is essentially a daytime vigilante that is most often revealed and is thus the leader of the village. To put it simply, if the vigilante is like Batman, the Samurai is like Superman.
Exposer - Though slightly less common than the roles above, the Exposer is a very powerful role. During the day, he is able to use /expose [name], which is essentially a public inspection during the day, in which most Mafia have already used their actions. The exposer will usually expose himself, but between daykill evasion and bodyguards, this is usually for the better.
Stalker - Just like the name implies, the stalker is able to see what a person did during the previous night. Though along the lines of an inspect, it has backfire potential as an inspect could look like a kill if names line up.

    Common Mafia Roles
Mafia - Very simply, it is a role that can kill with its comarades that share the command. There is usually some leader to the group with a special deviation (has two votes, can inspect, has a protect, etc) from this role.
Godfather - This role stands alone, but can usually create tons of havoc. Usually able to ignore, if not kill, distors, the godfather can kill multiple people during the night.
Poisoner - The poisoner is able to do just what it sounds like: poisons one person during the night. Note that this command does bypass protect, so village PRs must be careful when this role is around.
Daykiller - This is seen in themes such as Kirby (Meta Knight), Kid Icarus [KI] (Amazon Pandora when applicable, Phoenix in large games), and Body (Rabies, Schizophrenia, Angel/Prader-Will Syndrome when applicable). This role alone is often enough to keep the village from keeping too much momentum, as it is able to kill during the day and take someone out of a game. For example, say we were playing Dinos and the Apatosaurus (the inspector of the game) claimed. If not taken out by Troodon (the speedy Mafia that bypasses protect), it will almost certainly be destroyed by the Meteor (daykiller of the game) when it is around.
Speedy killer - In short terms, there is usually a role that can bypass protection with a straight-out kill. Village PRs should take great caution when this is around. Examples of this include Troodon in Dinos and Kefka in FF.
Vote controller - This role has an obscene amount of votes (100, 1000, 9999) that allows it to control the vote cycle of the game. Examples of this include Kronos in Myth and Dark Matter in Kirby.

    Cycles

Mafia games consist of 3 cycles: The night phase, the day phase, and the vote phase. These cycles will be explained below.

    Night Cycle

This is the cycle the game starts on. During the night, the mafia kills, inspector inspects, etc. To put it simply, everyone with a night action uses it during this time. Out of the three cycles, this is generally the best time to stay quiet to keep away from mafia unless you need to announce hax or ask for protection.

    Day Cycle

This cycle is typically for discussion about what happpened last night and any info the main village PRs may have found. Anyone with a day command would use it during this sequence. This is also when the candidate for the vote is usually formulated.

    Vote Cycle

The last cycle in the sequence, this is when you vote off someone you would like to remove from the game (with the exception of games like Trust and DAMT in Democracy form). While there can be limitations due to major voting powers, this is also the place to "rand" (which is when people can vote based on gut instinct if no info is known) if need be.

    FAQs

Q1. How can I join? And am I able to?
A1. Anyone is allowed to join, just type the /join button to do so. No experience needed!

Q2. Hey, this one guy leaked to everyone what my role was after he died! How is that fair?
A2. It's not, that falls under deadtalk, which is against against the rules. Get someone to screencap the PM to an MA (the auth of the channel) and the issue will be handled.

Q3. My partner voted me! What the hell??
A3. This also constitutes against the rules, just as revealing roles and botquoting is against the rules. Anything public can be handled if quick enough, otherwise take a screencap and wait for an MA to come online. The exception to this is bussing, in which the partner would vote you in order to look innocent. This must be agreed upon or at least mentioned to the other person first though.

Q4. Hey, I have this really cool idea for a game! How do I make one?
A4. Several coders are online daily, so it's just a matter of asking them to tutor you. Besides myself, you can ask people such as RiceKirby, Windblown, and Fuzzy. Simply use /themes, then /details themename to get a handle on who is able to code.

Q5. How do I become an MA?
A5. First off, never ask for a position, as you severely limit your chances then. While there is no strict path, the general idea is to be an example of a good member: follow the rules, be a good person and not whine too much, don't try to fight with people, and help whenever needed.

Q6. How do I "PM" someone?
A6. For computers, scroll to that players name, right click, and hit the appropriate option. For Androids, swipe to the left, scroll to that players name, and select "Private Message". Private messaging is mainly used to link village PRs or for Mafia to lie as said PRs and gain infiltration.

(I can add more if needed but this should be fine for now)

Was bored so I threw this together, hoping a guide can actually improve mafia quality ! Would make games funner if everyone knew how to play properly

    A beginners guide to mafia

    General:

Server mafia is generally a game of good vs evil. The good normally being named as " Village " while the bad "scum" or "mafia" ( mafia is the more common term ), the job of the village is to successfully get the mafia eliminated whether its by killing or voting or vice versa ( the other way round ) . Most themes are different in terms of layout or concept but most have common roles which are :

Villager : This makes up a large portion of roles, they are the simple citizens. They have no abilities or commands they just vote out players.
Inspector : The role of an inspector is to basically find who is good or bad, they have the power to find out the role of a player. Their command is commonly used in the night phase of mafia.
Bodyguard : The job of the bodyguard is to protect fellow team mates, most likely the inspector. Although it's never wise to claim in chat unless it's to the inspector in private messages. They use their command during the night phase.
Pretty Lady: You could say it's in the name, but the pretty lady has the power to distract a player of their choice which stops them from being able to carry out their night action. This takes place at the night phase.
Spy : The spy doesn't have a command but they have a very useful power, they can find out who is being killed or who is on what side ( depends on the theme. ). This takes place during the night phase.
Samurai : The Samurai, one of the few roles that take place in the day. They can kill during the day phase to try and get rid of the mafia.
Mafia : This is the enemy, they are out to get rid of the village side. They usually have a /kill command which takes place during the night phase, they normally have more than one player as the mafia.

    Phases:

In mafia there is 3 different phases which make up 1 day of the game, each phase usually last 30 seconds.

    Night phase:
The night phase is where most players use their commands. After this phase ends its revealed who has been killed.
    Day Phase:
The day phase is where players discuss who could be bad or not. Usually in default theme this is where the inspector reveals his findings ( unless it's a power role )
    Voting Phase:
This is where players vote a player to be eliminated from the game. It's commonly lead by the inspector.

    Common Mafia Terms:

    Power role :

A power role is a player who is on the village team who has a special command, such as inspector, pretty lady, bodyguard , Samurai and Spy.
    Rand:
This is where players vote for someone randomly, no actual logic is used.
    Scum:
    Another word for mafia
    Meatshield:
Where someone claims a role they are not to protect the actual person who has the role.
    MA:
    Mafia admin.
    Bussing:
Where the mafia vote their team to be eliminated to blend in with the rest of the village. This can be confused with Team voting but when a player "busses" they don't lead the vote, they follow the other players.
    Priority:
The order of which commands go through. This isn't determined by how fast you submit your command but by the mechanics of the theme such as in the default theme if only werewolf and mafia were remaining, the werewolf would kill first due to having a higher priority. type /priority theme on the server to see the specific priority list of a theme ( replace theme with the name of the actual theme you are looking for )

    = Mafia Rules =
Rule 1- All server rules apply in this channel. Type /rules to view them:
Ignorance of the rules does not justify breaking them. Someone else breaking a rule does not justify you breaking the same rule. If you choose to play on Android, you are not able to use it to justify rule breaking.

Rule 2- Mafia Admins, or MAs are here for the benefit of the channel. You can use /mas to get a listing of them:
If you are told something by an MA, it is advised you listen. PM an MA to report an instance of rulebreaking. Shouting out "BAN" and "teamvote!" and such in the chat is pointless and disrupts the game. If any MA is breaking a rule, contact a Mafia Super Admin or any Server Auth immediately.

Rule 3- Be respectful to your fellow players:
Do not insult players if they make a mistake. Helping them to learn the game instead of insulting them will make the game a lot more enjoyable for all. Do not flash multiple people needlessly, including trying to get them to play. Do not insult themes. If you have a legitimate complaint about a certain theme, post it in that theme's forum thread.

Rule 4- Make sure you can stay active for the entire game if you join, otherwise, /unjoin before the game starts:
If you must leave, you can ask a Mafia Admin in the chat for a "slay" in order to be removed from the game. A valid reason must be supplied with your request. Not liking any part of the game or participating in other channels are not valid reasons. Asking for a slay within the first few phases of the game, or leaving without asking for a slay, will result in punishment.

Rule 5- Do not attempt to ruin the game in any way, shape, or form:
Do not intentionally reveal, vote, or kill your teammates without their consent. Do not quote any of the game bots, including in private messages. Do not target a certain user or group of users repeatedly. If you are not currently alive in the game, do not discuss the game with anyone still playing. Do not copy other peoples' names or make your name similar to someone else's. Do not disable private messages (PMs) or ignore other players as Mafia is a game of heavy communication. Do not stall the game for any reason. Do not attempt to fake "Team Talk" or "Dead Chat".

    FAQ:

    How do I join mafia?

Type /join into mafia channel chat. Make sure you haven't got a "Clantag" in your name such as [Clantag]name.
    What is Teamvoting?
Voting your team to deliberately eliminate them from the game. This can often be confused with "Bussing".
What is a MA and how do I become one?
A Mafia admin or MA is a player who has powers to moderate the mafia channel. They deal with problems such as team voting. If you have a complaint about another user it's best to PM them to get the problem dealt with.
To Become a Mafia admin, you should to contribute to the mafia community and be a helpful and nice player. A user who breaks server rules and gets banned is unlikely to ever receive Mafia Admin.
How do I make a theme?
Themes are made using a particular kind of coding. There are many players in the mafia community who would help you if you wanted to make a theme. Although even when it's made it has to be approved by the Mafia QC Team. Who make sure all Themes are balanced and interesting and promote positive qualities such as communication.
How come when I was killed, my kill didn't go through?
This can be for a variety of reasons one may be that the player you were killing avoids nightkills or was protected by a bodyguard. Another may be that priority meant that you couldn't kill.

    Recommended Themes for Beginners:
Some themes can be a bit hard for newer players to understand if you are one of those new players you should try out these mafia themes to help you learn the basics:

    Default Theme:
Nothing beats the original right? It's the simplest theme in mafia!

I disagree. The information on /help is far from the ideal for a beginner. It only throws random hints on the player, it doesn't even tell them what the game is about.
And being honest, I would say the same about those 2 guides already posted here. They are not much different from anything there are in the server, and it's missing some basic stuff that we wouldn't notice that are important to new players.

That said, I'm not only going to criticize other people's guides. I have been thinking about writing it myself long before I suggested it, but I may make it a collaborative effort.

Very tempting offer of getting targeted n1 all games
If there is no definite time limit , I'd be willing to submit one on the 23rd

I think it would be easier with multiple people working on a guide.

Well, not like there's an official Guide Maker defined. If someone wants to assemble a team to help, why not?
I have zero (or even negative) interest in getting that free MA, I only want a better guide.

Who says there has to be only one guide? There will be a recommended guide for beginners (the best guide) and there will be other guides that beginners may look at if there interested.

Bad idea. Too many guides about the same topic will only get people confused. It also increases the chance of misinformation due to an outdated guide or conflicting hints.

What's the point of having more than one guide. You could just include the relevant information from the other guide to make the original better than it was previously.

There will be one "main" guide.
    For Example:

If you want to read a beginner guide on how to play Mafia, read this: ______________________________.
    This is the recommended guide.
If you still do not understand, sign up for Mafia Tutoring OR read another guide.
    Guides:

    _______________________________
    _______________

I have the first draft for my guide. I am open to any suggestions.

Fiery Espeon’s Beginner Guide on How to Play Mafia

This is your beginner guide for Mafia. If you’re interested in playing the game, then continue reading so you can fully understand the game and play.

    The Objective of the Game:

The objective of the game is to get rid of all opposing sides by voting or killing them. You win when the only people surviving is on your team.

    Basic Roles:

Villager- A villager is a person who usually has no actions and a vote of one. They are most important during the “voting” phase. All roles have a vote of 1 unless specified.

Inspector- An inspector is an inspector. A person who knows a specific person’s role if they have already inspected him/her. They can inspect during the night and find out which role someone is. They can claim when there is a Bodyguard alive and has the highest priority (see below).

Bodyguard- A bodyguard is a person who bodyguards a person during the night. They don’t claim and wait for another important person to claim so they can bodyguard the important person. Their goal is to bodyguard the person and stay alive.

Pretty Lady- a Pretty Lady is a distracter. They can stop you from doing a certain action during the night. Some roles can avoid the Pretty Lady. A Pretty Lady is also known as a hooker.

Bomb- A bomb is a person who will kill their killer during the night if the killer killed them. This is the same thing for day bombs.

Samurai- A daykiller. This person can kill during the day; they are usually exposed when they kill. That means everyone will know they’re role.

Exposer- An exposer is a person who exposes a role that he/she chooses. Everyone will know the role or only the exposer will know the role. Sometimes the exposer is also revealed.

Mayor- A role that has more than 1 vote. They can use this during the voting phase to their advantage.

Regular Mafia- A regular mafia is a person who is not on the village and kills during the night. They usually know their teammates.

Mafia Boss- The boss of the mafia. This role usually shares a kill with the Regular Mafia and has extra votes, extra kill, an inspect, a poison or a daykill.

Godfather- Usually sided with itself; this role usually has more than 1 nightkill and has more power than the regular mafia.

Poisoner- A role that can poison people during the night. If you are poisoned, it will tell you at the end of the night “You have 1 day to live” or “You have 2 days to live.”

Vigilante- A role that can kill for the village. They usually have the lowest priority.

Conspirator- This role can win with more than one side. That means even though he/she isn’t on your Current Team, they can still win with you.

    The Game Itself:

After you /join and the game starts, you will get your role and you will start at the “night” phase. This is the part of the game where you will get your role and do any night actions, if you have any.

The “standby” phase is the part of the game where day actions happen and you may reveal or discuss anything you find out, defend yourself, or simply pay attention to the chat.

The “voting” phase is where you can /vote someone out of the game. It is equivalent to killing someone. IF you find anyone or know of someone that isn’t on your team and is a threat and you have the vote power, you and your teammates can vote the role off.

    Sides:

So you know about the roles and the different phases of the game. Roles are assigned to sides. Your teammates will appear in “Current Team.” Only their role will appear. Your goal is to help your side.

    The basic sides are:

Village, Mafia Team, Mafia Team, Conspirator and Godfather. Villagers only belong on the main side, or village. There can be inspectors, bodyguards and mayors on mafia teams.

    Priority:

Priority is how fast a night action. The lower the number, the higher the priority and the faster the action. That means if a killer has a higher priority than a bodyguard, than the person will be killed even though they were protected. This is an important thing to look at for bodyguards, inspectors, mafia killers and hookers.

    Actions:

There are two types of actions: Day actions and night actions.

The action that all players have is /vote. /vote is used during the “voting” phase to lynch someone.

All actions, except for self actions, follow the same format: /action [Person That You Want to Target].

For example, if you are named RiceKirby and you want to kill Fiery Espeon during the night, type /kill Fiery Espeon. The dayphase and voting phase follow the same thing.

There are actions that you can’t use on your teammates and yourself. Self Actions are specified and follow the same format, but type your own name instead of someone else’s.

    Mafia Slang:

PM- Private Message. People usually use this to connect and communicate a team. This is mostly used by the village.

    BG- Bodyguard or protect.

    PL- Pretty Lady.

LGI- Let’s get it, or let’s get that person.

PR- Power Role. Any person that’s a part of the village and not a villager.

Slay- A kill during any phase, done by Mafia Administrators if the person has to leave the game or similar reasons.

Rand- A random vote where there is no logic or point.

    MAs- A Mafia Administrator

sMAs- A Super Mafia Administrator; the boss of the MAs

Theme- a different types of mafia situations with different roles and different actions

This slang is useful when you want to relay or understand info to other players via chat.

You are almost ready to try out and play Mafia. Don’t reveal your role to anyone unless they are on your team or you are an important role. The key to victory is to pay attention. [Dead] chat is where the killed players talk about the game with each other. [Team] talk is when you use /tt to talk to your team and discuss important things. Recommended themes for beginners are Default and Zelda. After you understand and learn more, you can try other themes. There are a lot of people in the channel that are willing to help you. Remember the people who are on your team or try to find out people who are on your team. View /commands mafia to use helpful commands if you need to know information. /roles will give you all the roles in the theme, /sides will give you all the sides in the theme and /priority will give the priority in the theme. Remember to follow the /mafiarules and report a player to a /ma if they break a Mafia Rule. If you break a rule, you will be banned. So be cautious and remember to have fun!

    A list of important commands:

/mafiaadmins: To get a list of current Mafia Admins.
/start: Starts a Game of Mafia with specified theme. Can also use /starttheme.
/vote: Start voting for a new game theme or vote! Can also use /votetheme.
/join: To join a Mafia game.
/unjoin: To unjoin a Mafia game during signups.
/help: For info on how to win in a game.
/roles: For info on all the Roles in the game.
/sides: For info on all teams in the game.
/myrole: To view again your role, help text and teammates.
/mafiarules: To see the Rules for the Game.
    /themes: To view installed themes.
/themeinfo: To view installed themes (more details).
/changelog: To view a theme's changelog (if it has one)
/details: To view info about a specific theme.
/priority: To view the priority list of a theme.
/flashme: To get a alert when a new mafia game starts. Type /flashme help for more info.
/playedgames: To view recently played games. Can also use /pg.
/topthemes: To view top themes. Default amount is 10, however other numbers can be used (higher numbers may cause lag)
/windata: To view the win data of a theme
/update: To update a Mafia Theme. /update themename::newurl if changing the url. Contact an sMA if the theme name is changed to prevent conflicts.
/featured: To view the currently featured Mafia Theme and Text.

    Mafia Rules:

±Rule 1- All server rules apply in this channel. Type /rules to view them:

Ignorance of the rules does not justify breaking them. Someone else breaking a rule does not justify you breaking the same rule. If you choose to play on Android, you are not able to use it to justify rule breaking.

±Rule 2- Mafia Admins, or MAs are here for the benefit of the channel.

±Rule 3- Be respectful to your fellow players:
Do not insult players if they make a mistake. Helping them to learn the game instead of insulting them will make the game a lot more enjoyable for all. Do not flash multiple people needlessly, including trying to get them to play. Do not insult themes. If you have a legitimate complaint about a certain theme, post it in that theme's forum thread.

±Rule 4- Make sure you can stay active for the entire game if you join, otherwise, /unjoin before the game starts:
If you must leave, you can ask a Mafia Admin in the chat for a "slay" in order to be removed from the game. A valid reason must be supplied with your request. Not liking any part of the game or participating in other channels are not valid reasons. Asking for a slay within the first few phases of the game, or leaving without asking for a slay, will result in punishment.

±Rule 5- Do not attempt to ruin the game in any way, shape, or form:
Do not intentionally reveal, vote, or kill your teammates without their consent. Do not quote any of the game bots, including in private messages. Do not target a certain user or group of users repeatedly. If you are not currently alive in the game, do not discuss the game with anyone still playing. Do not copy other peoples' names or make your name similar to someone else's. Do not disable private messages (PMs) or ignore other players as Mafia is a game of heavy communication. Do not stall the game for any reason. Do not attempt to fake "Team Talk" or "Dead Chat".

Still a bad idea. It doesn't even solve the issues I pointed in my previous post.

I'm going to be brutally honest; that guide made me feel as if I was at the Battle of Passchendaele. There's a lot of grammatical inconsistencies apparent (An inspector is an inspector? Yeats and Coleridge should be very afraid), the guide wouldn't be coherent for a veteran, let alone a newbie and it's clearly been rushed to meet a time limit.

If you really want to produce a guide for Mafia, increase the quality of the piece and take more time and care into creating it. Alternatively, group together with a few members of the community and work together on correcting mistakes and making a guide better suited for newbies.

*First Draft. Ok i get you and I know this and we are all trying to develop a general idea.
A notable member in the Mafia community that doesn't want to be named thinks that we should approach this in a different way. We should try to bring back old themes , so old players and veterans will come back and play more. We will shortly group together and get a PiratePad and work together.
    The Updated Guide:
Fiery Espeon’s Beginner Guide on How to Play Mafia

This is your beginner guide for Mafia. You know how to join the game but you are confused and don’t know how to play. If you’re interested in playing the game, then continue reading so you can fully understand the game and how to play it.

    The Objective of the Game:

The objective of the game is to get rid of all opposing sides by voting or killing them. You win when the only people surviving is on your team.

    Basic Roles:

Villager: A villager is a role who usually has no actions and a vote of one. They are most important during the “voting” phase. All roles have a vote of 1 unless specified.

Inspector: An inspector is a role who can identify a person’s role. They can inspect during the night and find out the role of the person they chose. They usually claim when there is a Bodyguard alive.

Bodyguard: A bodyguard is a role who protects a person during the night. They don’t claim and wait for another important person to claim so they can bodyguard the important person. Their goal is to protect an important person on their team and stay alive.

Pretty Lady: A Pretty Lady is a distracter. They can stop you from doing a certain action during the night. Some roles can avoid the Pretty Lady. A Pretty Lady is also known as a hooker.

Bomb: A bomb is a role that kills their killer. If the bomb is killed, the killer will die. A Day bomb does the same thing but with day kills.

Samurai: A day killer. This person can kill during the day; they are usually exposed when they kill. That means everyone will know their role when they kill.

Exposer: An exposer is a role that exposes a person that he/she chooses. Everyone will know their role or only the exposer will know the role. Sometimes the exposer is revealed.

Mayor:- A role that has more than 1 vote. They can use this during the voting phase to their advantage.

Mafia Goon: A role that is not on the village and usually shares a kill with his/her teammates during the night. They usually know their teammates.

Mafia Boss: The boss of the mafia. This role usually shares a kill with the Regular Mafia and has extra votes, an extra kill, an inspect, a poison or a day kill.

Godfather: Usually sided with itself; this role usually has more than 1 nightkill and has more power than the regular mafia.

Poisoner: A role that can poison people during the night. If you are poisoned, it will tell you at the end of the night “You have 1 day to live” or “You have 2 days to live.”

Vigilante: A role that can kill for the village. They usually have the lowest priority.

Conspirator: This role can win with more than one side. That means even though he/she isn’t on your Current Team, they may be able to still win with you.

Werewolf: A role that can kill, usually has a higher priority than regular Mafia. This role is special because he/she kills if he/she is distracted by the Pretty Lady.

    The Game Itself:

After you /join and the game starts, you will get your role and you will start at the “night” phase. This is the part of the game where you will do night actions, if you have any.

It is a majority vote. Everyone doesn't need to vote. For example, if 4 people voted RiceKirby, 1 person voted Fiery Espeon and 2 people voted Fuzzysqurl, RiceKirby will be lynched because he has the most votes. A voteshield is the ability of certain roles where if they are voted, a specific amount of votes are subtracted from the total.

    Sides:

So, you know about the roles and the different phases of the game. Roles are assigned to sides. Your teammates will appear in “Current Team.” Only their role will appear. Your goal is to help your side.

Rand- A random vote where there is no logic or point.

    MAs- A Mafia Administrator

sMAs- A Super Mafia Administrator; the boss of the MAs

Theme- Themes are different types of mafia situations with different roles and different actions. Each theme has a different concept.

This slang is useful when you want to relay or understand info to other players via chat.

I could help with proofreading any guides and try and give suggestions but there are a lot users better equipped to give advice on the actual content of the guides.

Something that I think damages being able to retain newcomers is the lower visibility of default, it was formerly auto-started every 5 themes, it's confusing to just be thrown in to a game of mafia right off the bat and i think newcomers being able to easily associate default with the mafia/werewolf that they have played at parties, school, camp and the like eases them in to understanding the basics of the game. Default isn't played very often now and I imagine someone who joins the channel only to have themes thrown at them left right and centre can find it overwhelming

Something that could be useful is quick guides to the basics of a theme being in the OP of their thread, for instance for Zelda something along the lines of

"Link should claim if Koume is not in the game however mafia members may fakeclaim Link in an attempt to get Link killed night 1. If Link is killed night 1 but Impa or Nayru (the bodyguards) are still alive, Zelda should claim"

That extremely basic of course but I just provided to give people an idea of what I meant .

I've done a quick read of Fiery's guide and here are some quick thoughts/corrections

Samurai: A day killer. This person can kill during the day; they are usually exposed when they kill. That means everyone will know they’re role when they kill.

    Should be "their"

Conspirator: This role can win with more than one side. That means even though he/she isn’t on your Current Team, they can still win with you.

It isn't definite that a conspirator will be able to win with you (I don't think so at least) so I would change "can" to "could" or can still" to "may still be able to"

I would explain Plurality Lynch and give a mention to Majority Lynch at the end of the voting section. I would mention the /sides, /priority and /my role commands in the relevant sections as well as the commands section

/commands Mafia already explains it to you. Anyway, I gave each a small summary.
If you become specific with each individual theme, it will be an advanced guide. This is just a basic guide that you can at least learn how to play Default.
Added Werewolf to roles and fixed corrections.

I'm not suggesting to add guides for each theme in to the beginner guide, it's just a suggestion that could theme creators (or users could write one and post it in thread and an admin or the OP could edit it in) could add to the OP of a theme's thread as I believe the thread of a theme is linked in a theme's /info. I think it could help retain newcomers.

Someone once suggested a /tips [theme] command, which would be similar to /changelog, but instead show hints for that theme written by the theme author. It's ridiculously easy to code, the hard part would be updating all themes with that.

The QC will also have to review the tips. They have to check if they're accurate and easy to understand. They can also add suggestions for tips. This would be a long process for all themes if we do code /tips. All theme authors have to add these and a lot of them are not in PO anymore. (Fuzzysqurl will do it as he absorbs them). It's going to be a long process.

Werewolf: A role that can kill, usually has a higher priority than regular Mafia. This role is special because he/she kills if he/she is distracted by the Pretty Lady.

I think the WW part need some correction bc WW actually kill the PL when distracted by it like he/she kills the Pretty Lady when the Pretty Lady is trying to distract them instead of getting distracted

    maybe need another correction

EDIT : Add ignores any distract for Godfather part

Added examples for both the speedy killer and vote controller portions. Anything else that needs to be cleaned up?

Felt like making a beginners guide for mafia, I would really love if mafia was back to it's normal state.

    Beginners guide for playing mafia.

    The goal of the game.

So the main goal of mafia is to eliminate everyone who is not on your team to be able to win.

    Main common sides

Sides are the different teams that all the roles are assigned in the game. The main common sides in mafia are Village, Mafia, and Conspirator.

    Basic roles

Villager- This is mostly the most common role in every theme, there is always a least one villager and it is a person who mostly has no actions other than their vote.

Mayor- This is the role that has more than a vote of 1, they can be very helpful in the voting phase.

Inspector- An inspector can use /inspect during the night to find a person's role. The inspection will be revealed to them if there is no distractor on them or if they don't die. In default they can claim at the start of the theme if a bodyguard is in and they have a higher priority than all the mafias that can kill.

Bodyguard- A bodyguard is someone who can protect someone else during the night. In games such as default they should always try to protect the inspector if they claim.

Pretty Lady- This is a distractor on the village side. If they distract someone, it will stop the player from doing a night action during the night, however bear in mind that some roles can ignore distractions and some can kill the Pretty Lady if distracted by it.

Exposer- This is the role that can expose someones role during the day. Everyone will either see the persons role that the exposer exposed or the exposer sees it and the exposer can be revealed sometimes. It is best for the exposer to claim when there is a bodyguard that has the highest priority over the mafia's kill or distract.

Samurai- This is a daykiller on the village side, they can kill during the day and most of the time they are revealed when they kill.

Bomb- This is the role that will kill the person that kills them during the night phase if the killer does kill them, there are day bombs as well and they obviously kill their killer that killed them during the day. It is sided with the village.

Vigilante- This is a night killer on the village side.

Conspirator- A conspirator can win with more than 1 side, even though they are on their on team. It is best not to kill the conspirator if they claim or get exposed, however please bear in mind they can play for anyone's win condition so sometimes they can be really annoying.

Poisoner- Here is a role that can poison during the night, their poisons normally last for 1 day or 2 days.

Mafia- This is a role that can kill during the night and mostly knows their teammates, they are sided with the mafia.

    The 3 main phases

Night Phase- This is the phase where most people have their commands and can use it, it will show what happened when the phase is over such as people being killed.

Day Phase- The day phase is also for some people who have their commands and can be able to use it, but most of the time it is where the players should talk about who is bad and good.

Voting Phase- This is the phase where you can vote for a player to be removed from the game.

    Power Roles

The power roles are the roles that usually have an action during the day or night (with the exception of vote). An example of one is the inspector, because they can inspect someone during the night. Usually if a inspector claims in the default theme they ask for power roles, it is helpful to private message them so they know your role and can connect to other roles.

    Mafia acronyms/Terms

These acronyms/termes are mainly used in the mafia chat by other players if they want to understand or known something.

PM- Private Message, this is very helpful within communicating with a team.

    BG- Bodyguard

    PL- Pretty Lady

    PR- Power Role

Rand- A vote with no reason or logic to it.

Slay- It is a kill during any phase, it can be done by a Mafia Admin or Super Mafia Admin if there is a valid reason for the slay.

    MA- Mafia admin

Scum- Bad role (that is not on the village side)

    Mafia Rules

(16:31:16) ±Rule 1- All server rules apply in this channel. Type /rules to view them:
(16:31:16) Ignorance of the rules does not justify breaking them. Someone else breaking a rule does not justify you breaking the same rule. If you choose to play on Android, you are not able to use it to justify rule breaking.

(16:31:16) ±Rule 2- Mafia Admins, or MAs are here for the benefit of the channel. You can use /mas to get a listing of them:
(16:31:16) If you are told something by an MA, it is advised you listen. PM an MA to report an instance of rulebreaking. Shouting out "BAN" and "teamvote!" and such in the chat is pointless and disrupts the game. If any MA is breaking a rule, contact a Mafia Super Admin or any Server Auth immediately.

(16:31:16) ±Rule 3- Be respectful to your fellow players:
(16:31:16) Do not insult players if they make a mistake. Helping them to learn the game instead of insulting them will make the game a lot more enjoyable for all. Do not flash multiple people needlessly, including trying to get them to play. Do not insult themes. If you have a legitimate complaint about a certain theme, post it in that theme's forum thread.

(16:31:16) ±Rule 4- Make sure you can stay active for the entire game if you join, otherwise, /unjoin before the game starts:
(16:31:16) If you must leave, you can ask a Mafia Admin in the chat for a "slay" in order to be removed from the game. A valid reason must be supplied with your request. Not liking any part of the game or participating in other channels are not valid reasons. Asking for a slay within the first few phases of the game, or leaving without asking for a slay, will result in punishment.

(16:31:16) ±Rule 5- Do not attempt to ruin the game in any way, shape, or form:
(16:31:16) Do not intentionally reveal, vote, or kill your teammates without their consent.

These guides are all starting to look the same. I was considering taking an actual game and then making a diagram of sorts to explain to new players what is happening in each phase because it seems a lot more of a hands-on approach to teaching mafia rather than listing roles and writing a lot of text. I know I am a learner by example, so taking logs might help because it allows you to experience a game without actually having to play it in fear of being yelled at by the regulars for not knowing what to do (which happens a lot).

edit: not to entirely replace the guide because I agree that's the format I'd like it to appear as, but as an addendum or something

The guide-in-public trend is my fault, I'm sorry :/ We should probably have a diagram to go alongside the guide though, that way we can cover multiple learning structures as Windblown said.
