General Porygon is a Pokémon to watch out for in Little Cup. It has one of the highest BSTs in the tier, at a whopping 395, which in addition to its great power also gives it solid bulk. As with a lot of Normal types, it has a vast movepool: backing up its STAB Tri Attack are Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Shadow Ball and Hidden Power. It also has 2 very good abilities to choose from: Trace can help you copy something useful like Chinchou's Volt Absorb while Download could potentially give you a free Choice Specs just by switching in. Porygon's not perfect however. Its pure Normal typing lacks resistances, while being weak to Fighting moves is never ideal in this Fighting type dominated metagame. And Porygon is quite slow, with its speed maxing out at an unimpressive 14, although it can rectify that with Agility. Despite its flaws, Porygon is well worth using. Defensive Porygon @ Eviolite Trait: Trace / Download Calm Nature (+SDef -Atk) EVs: 236 HP / 196 Def / 76 Sdef Recover Thunder Wave Tri Attack Shadow Ball / Ice Beam This set is a great way of dealing with defensive Pokémon like Chinchou, Vullaby and defensive Misdreavus. Recover is used in the first slot to keep Porygon alive longer. Thunder Wave allows it to bring faster Pokémon to a dead stop. Tri Attack is the STAB move, and does good damage to anything not resisting it. Shadow Ball hits Misdreavus hard; Ice Beam can be used for bulky Ground and Flying types like Drilbur and Vullaby. Either of Porygon's abilities could be used here: Trace gives handy switch in opportunities while Download could make this set more powerful. The EVs give Porygon 26/24/24 defences with Eviolite, making it exceedingly difficult to OHKO without a strong Fighting move. Special Sweeper Porgyon @ Life Orb Trait: Download / Trace Modest Nature (+SAtk -Atk) / Timid Nature (+Spd -Atk) EV: 40 Def / 236 SAtk / 200 Spd Agility Tri Attack Shadow Ball Psychic / Hidden Power Fighting Showcasing Porygon's great power and movepool, this set is designed to clear up late game Agility pushes Porygon's Speed up to 26 (with a Modest nature), enough to outrun Choice Scarfed base 17 Speed Pokémon. You could use a Timid nature which gives you enough speed to tie with Choice Scarfed base 19s like Misdreavus. Tri Attack is the STAB move, and does good damage to anything not resisting it especially after a Download boost. Shadow Ball hits Ghost types super effectively; Psychic OHKOes Mienfoo and most Timburr at +1, while Hidden Power Fighting OHKOes Pawniard. The EVs maximise speed and power with the leftovers in defence to improve bulk a bit. Since this set is all about the power, Life Orb is the best item to use. Download is recommended, since if Porygon gets a special attack boost it becomes extremely powerful. However, Trace can give you switch in opportunities. Tank Porygon @ Eviolite Trait: Trace / Download Modest Nature (+SAtk -Atk) EV: 236 HP / 40 Def / 236 SAtk Tri Attack Shadow Ball Psychic Recover A fusion of the above 2 sets, this set is designed to showcase Porygon's power and bulk at the same time. Tri Attack is once more the STAB move. Shadow Ball hits the Ghost types, while Psychic hits the FIghting types Porygon lures in (apart from Scraggy). Recover keeps Porygon alive and healthy for longer. Trace can be used to copy useful abilities like Chinchou's Volt Absorb and Ponyta's Flash Fire, while Download could be used for the chance to make Porygon even more powerful. The EVs maximise bulk and power with the leftovers in defence. Eviolite gives this set 26/21/21 defences, making it very durable. Other Options Porygon can run a Choice Scarf set with Trick to help remedy its speed, although Normal type moves aren't good to be locked into. Porygon can also sweep with Trick Room. Thunderbolt can be used to OHKO Mantyke, but has little utility elsewhere. Discharge can be used on the defensive set for its paralysis chance, although for the most part Thunder Wave is better. Charge Beam can be used, but it needs to raise special attack twice to outdamage Thunderbolt. Selective Hidden Powers can be used. On offensive sets, Fighting OHKOs Pawniard while Ground OHKOs Magnemite. Toxic can be used on the defensive set to cripple Pokémon like defensive Ponyta that run Flame Body. You could change its defensive set to include Recycle with Berry Juice, but it would prefer the permanent bulk of Eviolite. Lastly, you could use Porygon to set up weather although it's generally better sticking to existing sets. Checks and Counters Fighting types in general are good checks. Mienfoo and Scraggy can also OHKO with their respective High Jump Kicks, but the offensive sets both 2HKO with Tri Attack. Magnemite is immune to paralysis and walls the Defensive set. However, repeated Shadow Balls will wear it down. Munchlax walls Porygon completely, but can't do much back. Pawniard can beat most sets that lack Hidden Power Fighting without too much trouble, using Knock Off to remove its Eviolite and then going in for the kill. Ferroseed can cripple Porygon with status while taking little from its attacks. Lastly, Toxic and Toxic Spikes are a good way of shutting down Porygon.
Mention the following in OO: Discharge that has a 30% chance of paralysing, Charge Beam can boost its SAtk, Recycle and Berry Juice. And mention Pawniard in C&C since it can cripple Porygon with Knock Off as long as it doesn't carry Hidden Power Fighting.
Is the analytic set even legal? IIRC still can't get it with recover or tri attack? Download is good enough to be main slash on the the bulky set, a lot more useful than trace if you play it smartly.
Tri attack isn't legal with analytic as its a move learned after level 5 and the pomeg glitch is only available in gen 3. If only game freak left it there...but then klink might have actually been viable if they did :v More on topic I'd say add toxic to OO for obvious reasons. Since porygon is the bulkiest bastard around you could also use it as a weather setter if you see fit. Nothing much else for me to comment on~
Bump. Can't think of anything else that needs changing/adding, so would the QC people mind taking a look?
I don't think the fusion set is a good one. Yes it hit hards, but it limits Porygons ability to be thr best defensive pivot in the meta. I honestly haven't tried it, but I will test it out. This is just at a glance and some experience with the bulky pivot set. Getting closer to my goal....
