Dusted off the old Wii today which got me thinking about Pokemon Colosseum, a game that I never had the chance to actually beat. And then that got me thinking on how hard that game was. you pretty much can't beat the final bosses without grinding, a point which I never got past. (I will beat it one day however!) here's hoping there will be a XD sequel of some sort someday

The ranger games are also pretty brutal, specifically the first one. Salamence was the worst (since none of the pokemon in the area gave a very good assist on him). Having to do all the circles in one go really increased the difficulty.

So what's everyone else's thoughts on the hardest pokemon game? feel free to pick from any pokemon-related game and say what you think it's so difficult etc

Oh God, oh God, maybe it was me being like 5 but FireRed, oh Jesus. I'd be going quite well until my Rival battles where he invariably swept the floor with me. After beating his goddamn Alakazam in his final rival battle when it kills everything that moves I was sure it was essentially annihilation time. And then Giovanni was piss-easy and I walked into the final cave with a swagger and immediately got a no-questions-asked 6-0 hammering from the first trainer in there.

Ever since I've hated Fire type starters.

Well pretty much any pokemon game is easy as long as you grind up for a gym battle.

I'd have to say Black/White would be the hardest if you didn't take the time to grind up all that much. Pretty frequent boss fights with rivals that aren't exactly push overs, pretty much every gym was an uphill battle if you were around the same level and the final parts of the game were exceptionally challenging for a pokemon game had you not taken the time to level up a bit before the E4. Second would probably go to the original Red/Blue, simply because your rival was so much higher in level than anything else previously.

It's just my experience but Emerald always got me, I always ended up at like level 40 at the E4 and could not be bothered to grind up to a suitable level. Always almost lost to Glacia and got finished off by Drake. It took some grinding off of Sydney and Phoebe to beat them. All other Pokémon games I find easier to grind (thanks based Audino).

G/S/C That damn leader with the miltank. other than that.. it was easy. Training Pokemon was hard because you could barely battle anything in the wild over level 30. FR/LG were pretty hard/puzzling

Well, Colloseum was pretty much the hardest by far, since battles took a long time to do, and because the leveling in the game did not increase gradually. The final two bosses both increased by about 10 levels sequentially, without any form of warning. You also had a significant lack of Pokemon to use and gen 3's movepools weren't very nice to a lot of Pokemon.

Some of the ranger games had a few bullshit moments too, but a least most of them are do-able.

In my opinion Pokemon Black and White gyms are easy but finding the 8 Sages are very difficult. They are hiding throughout the map, well finding Landorus and Thundurus is not so easy but I gotta Thundurus. So in my opinion Black and White is hard for me.

For me it was gen 4 games, not really the whole game in itself, but the elite four always got me, not Aaron or Flint but Bertha and Lucian. Bertha and her sand storm always got me knocked down to less then no HP to save my life, and as for Lucian I had nothing to attack his Bronzong, or barely any pokemon for that fact. Also, the fact that I never had enough Full Restores got to me, lost all my money wasting it on them...so I end up quiting that generation and returned on B/W and did pretty well~

Coliseum was by far the hardest Pokémon game they have ever made (Battle Revolution and Stadium do not count. Stadium was easy too). It was so hard to purify shadow Pokémon, not to mention that until you found Agate you couldn't purify anything, so you were stuck with a bunch of under leveled shadow Pokémon and two over leveled eeveelutions. Not to mention that the boss' Pokémon were some of the most over leveled for where you were at in the series history, typically five levels higher than the grunts. And don't even get me started on the Religam tower... Double battles didn't make it easier either. The only reason I beat that game the first time was because of the master ball glitch. Try nuzlocking Coliseum, I DARE you. Still my second favorite game in the series next to XD.
B/W 2 can get pretty hard with the difficulty keys.

I actually found the first Ranger game pretty hard.
Never actually finished it in the end :/

Then there's Mystery Dungeon 2. Darkrai in the end is a pain, without moves like Discharge to spam.

And now I realize the side games are actually harder than the main games.

Hardest pokemon game I've ever played are the Volt White/Blaze Black (2) hacks. With nuzlocke rules and the difficulty keys, those were quite the challenge.
I've never played any pokemon games on console, but all the handhelds are pretty easy.

Has anyone tried to play Pokemon Puzzle's Very Hard+ modes? The speed at which the computer moves and how ridiculously fast the rows come up is astonishing. That is probably one of the hardest things to do in any game, even though its just a reskin of Tetris Attack.

I had trouble with Emerald when first playing it, I didn't really know much about Pokémon back then.
Hardest I've played would be the Mystery Dungeon games, I swear there are more BS hax in those games than in regular games.

Looking back I def. feel as I grew up the games progressively got easier. Crystal was a complete jerk (never finished it nor the remake), Ruby took me a while, Pearl faster still, and Black was a breeze (6 mons severely underleveled ghetsis was e z after hydreigon).

side games can be really challenging. i'm actually quite embarrassed to say that i've only just finished explorers of time (got it release day) because monster houses and traps scare the absolute shit out of me. christ i'm awful lol

Stadium 1 and 2, B/W 1 were hard af for because for S1&2 the AI was a cheating bastard, and with the gen 1 mechanics and the wrong pokemon you'd lose 8/10 in higher difficulty battles. B/W 1 were really a pain in the ass, because of the level imbalance and grinding required after the E4 considering the 20-30 level jump in the NPC's pokemon afterwards.

I've played all of the main stream games (and things like the Orre games, Rangers, and PMD), but I've never found them to be particularly hard. I think B/W was the hardest because I was severely underleveled compared to the E4 and I had to spam Revives between Chandelure and Ferrothorn, which had fantastic synergy.

I also think that Colo was easy for me because I used to always do Mt. Battle before Realgam Tower, and I actually remember complaining that the difficulty was set a bit low until Nascour. Still, Realgam's level curve is among the most ridiculous ones between all of the games.

Atm most nuzlockes give me trouble, because I despise deaths with team members you've been so long with. A random crit, or death by status effects. If you have even a small connection with these Pokemon, the nuzlocke will be even more of a challenge (imo). That and hacks that are meant to be nuzlocked (like Crystal Enhanced and Yet Another Firered Hack) are much harder than vanilla Pokemon games, so I have much more fun playing them.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Conquest yet!
While most of it is pretty simple, when you are just starting out in a story there is one type that makes it nigh-on impossible to advance. Dragons.
When they can use dragon rage to deal 45 damage and potentially OHKO up to two Pokémon at once, it gets pretty frustrating, especially as a lot of the time not a lot of solid counters are available to use against them.

I still haven't completed White 2, is it just me or is BW2 by far the longest and most difficult of all the main series games? Ugh it never ends.

God no, I found BW1 and BW2 an absolute doddle to go through, I never felt that challenged and smashed through it fairly easily though.

Brawly from Dewford Town still gives me nightmares.

    Pokémon - Blaze Black 2

I... I just... I just want NOT to play that again EVER... I, just.

I caught like 3 Pokémon (excluding Starter) and got literally beat up like crap thanks to Cheren with like Level 13 Pokémon for Pete's Sake! I would easily beat 'em by AR Codes and stuff... but why can't I play normally?

    Dray (creator of the hack)... can you make an 'easy' version for it? ;~;

Excluding ROM hacks, for me, Diamond/Pearl would have to be the hardest game, i mean the gym leaders were easy but Cynthia just had overleveled as hell Pokemon so I remember wiping like 8 times at here, giving up and then just grinding to level 60's to beat her. Platinum was probably harder early-game because of the level curve, but i found it got easier as it went on.

The hardest games that I've played would be Crystal and HeartGold/SoulSilver. The level curve in those games is completely ridiculous. You're constantly fighting level 15-25 Pokémon from the second gym all the way up until you get to route 27. By the time you get to the 8th gym in Blackthorn City, you are so underleveled that defeating Clair will sometimes be as difficult as defeating the Elite Four, if not more so. If you are underleveled in Emerald, you could just use the Match Call function to rematch trainers over and over again. In the Johto based games, you were lucky if even a simple school kid with level 15 Pokémon would have a rematch with you. I have to this day never managed to get to the Elite Four in Johto without level grinding for several days or even weeks.

l found the end of HG/SS to be sort of difficult, but it was really because there was no good place to grind before Clair and the E4

Kalos(XY) is often regarded as the easiest region to play through since you have free, comparatively effortless EV grinding, the EXP Share and a bunch of other things working in your favor. What happens when that EXP share goes away? It's easily the hardest. Playing through XY without the blasted thing is a pain in the ass, since you're normally at least a couple levels behind where you "should" be when you don't have half your earned experience distributed to everything without even having them see battles.

I don't care what anybody says, the Original Pokemon Ranger game is easily the hardest the loops reseting when you lifted your stylus was simply brutal, to me at least.

For me, the hardest Pokemon game I've ever played was Black/White. Basically I had to grind through all the gym leader and rival battles and then beating the Elite Four before getting destroyed by Ghetsis' Hydreigon.

Even though I have yet to play it, I've heard that Kalos' is really easy due to it's easy EV system and Exp. Share.

Pokemon Colosseum was just weird imo, Did anybody not think the same?
The way the animation was done,
the way the bike used to hover on the sand,
the mechanical environment you was in
the other people you came across in the game.
    etc
as for the difficulty, I cant actually remember.

But I think the Emerald gym (6th, 7th, or 8th) with the puzzle was really hard. I don't think I beat if before I gave it to my friend.

Hardest for me was Emerald, but not for any of the actual story. It was the Battle Frontier that got me. Sure the Pike was easy but the Pyramid? You may as well put me in the Clock Arena from the 75th Hunger Games, the wild Pokémon always destroyed me before I could even get to the Regi trio (WHY???) no matter what awesomeness I found.

I don't know if any of you got that far but the original Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue had an Ultimate Dungeon where you're level was reset to 1 and you only had 1 item.
Also it had like 99 floors (I never got that far lol) Pretty hard..
From the main series I'd say BW was the most challenging.

Oh, the Zero Isle? They did the same thing in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky both with a total of 5 x_x. Yeah that thing was impossible too, though I did make it to floor 80 one time.

Has to be Pokemon Stadium for me. I remember struggling with 2 cups on it. One was Lv 10-15 and the other Lv 25-30 or something. I beaten Mewtwo on Round 1 mode but got stuck on last 2 cups again on Round 2 mode.

Also the Zero Isle on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time and Sky are no joke. They are extremely hard. I've found a note that I've completed Zero Isle North. Others I hadn't beaten yet.

Emerald was difficult but I can never work out why........... (physical/special split grumble grumble grumble)
Black/White was hard as well because the wild pokemon were always much lowers levels than the Gym Leaders, which makes it particularly difficult to grind.

I wanna say there's at least 4 games that I'd consider hard, for different reasons:

Emerald- My Pokemon team always ends up criminally under leveled by the E4, forcing a lot of losses to Drake and grinding in VR.
Soulsilver- Fighting Lance's Dragonites without an ice type...
White- My Emboar was a wrecking ball(it was Level 63 by the time I beat Ghetsis). It was too strong compared to the team I used the 1st time I fought the E4. It was a poorly leveled team, with my Emboar being at least 10-15 levels ahead of my next-best Pokemon. It forced me to capture the Swords trio( Cobalion, Virizion and Terrakion) and an Excadrill, and eventually Zekrom, which I used to defeat N and Ghetsis). A pure pain in the ass.
